I am looking at getting a different nano tank and want to use my existing 20 x 20 stand. I would like to get a peninsula tank which will fit width wise, but will be about 3 to 3.5 inches to long.
Could I get away with placing a sheet of 1/2 to 3/4 inch plywood on top of my existing stand to support the overhang?

Is it a rimless tank? If so, and it's only 3-3.5 inches total I personally would be comfortable with 3/4" plywood. A rimless tank will be evenly distributed across the plywood, just be sure you use a leveling mat. Also make sure you secure and center the plywood really well. And sink the screws all the way!! One screw too high could be disaster in the making.

Will the water volume be the same? I would be concerned about extra weight and whether the stand is designed for more weight. As far as plywood, Unless it’s got a waterproof surface, if it gets wet it might start buckling and create an uneven surface. The big box stores have shelving pieces that are waterproof which might work.

Yes, the stand is very stout. I would trust double the weight that is on it now. But the new tank is actually a tad less so should be fine. I will probably cover it with shelving liner or some other plastic coating to make it waterproof. Good point though. I was going to just paint it, but the addition of the plastic coating is a good idea.
