Hello,

My wife finally gave me the go-ahead to start my new build. I will be going with a Red Sea Reefer 170. I have most of the components from previous builds over the years and already have a ATI non-dimmable t5 fixture with reefbrite all blue add-on. I really do not want to mount via ceiling like I have in the past and also do not want to use mounting arms. This tank is going in my home office and I would like a nice finished look.

The idea is full SPS after tank fully breaks in. I am not expecting to ever upgrade tank so the lighting I go with should not be "with intent on upgrading tank int he future."

The tank dimensions are 24x20x20. I expect to have 1" of sand and roughly nothing on the outer 3" of tank so I can get my cleaner around the glass. Essentially all my corals except maybe a few softies will be in the middle of the tank confined to an area of 18x17 or so.

I have been looking at three options, all of which have tank mounted arms.

XR 30 Pro

XR 15 Pro

AI Prime

If you could give me any feedback on these units that would be great. I know that the XR 30 Pro would be the ultimate and cover all my needs but would the AI Prime or the XR 15 Pro fit my needs as well. My thought is if I use the XR 30 Pro and have to cut lighting down to 50% of max what is the difference if I use the XR 15 Pro at a higher intensity?

Thanks for any help you can give in advance.

Jared

With either the xr30 or xr15 I would run it at 35% and not 50 you will be burning up coral due to the intensity of the lighting.
I have a IM Fusion 40 with similar dimensions
  • DIMS (24” x 20” x 19”)
and I use the XR30 pro full coverage and run it at 35% may go up to 40% but not much more.
