PMUP Pre-Filter

Hi,
I am in the process of starting up a new 300 gallon tank. I will be using several of the PMUP in my sump just wondering if anyone knows of I need to buy some type of pre-filter for them? If so what do you guys suggest?

The PMUP should not be allowed to suck in any sand or foreign matter. A performer of foam or netting would be a good idea so long as it was cleaned from time to time.
