I’m newer to keeping SPS and the other day I noticed what looked to be a dead branch on my Pocillopora. I figured I would just leave it alone as it still had good color and polyp extension, and hope it healed up. A few days went by and I started to look closer, it appears to me that coralline algae has started to grow on it. I’m not sure if I should be concerned so I wanted to get some more opinions before I started chopping things up. My though is to cut off the dead branch or what I suspected is dead.

I have other SPS in thetank and they all seem happy from what I can tell. This is on the higher light side of the coral so I though maybe it was too bright and that’s what killede branch maybe?

tank parameters
90 gallons- 30 gallon sump
lights hydra 26 HD x2
Par 210
Nitrate 5-7
Phos - near 0
Alk 8 dkh
Cal 420
Mag 1320
Any thoughts are appreciated.

I personally would leave it alone unless it continues to get worse. The. I would clip the bad parts off. Coraline should not out compete it. On a side note I would pull that sucker out of your tank. Pocillopora spread like a weed and can take over your tank. Not all varieties do but it really is not worth taking a chance it in the long run.

If it dies, it’s a blessing in disguise.

I can see say the same thing for many species of polyp-less acropora you guys worship on a cross that I cant tell the difference from plastic coral at Walmart.

Some types of Pocillopora will die off their undergrowth under different tank conditions. Some stay in more spherical masses. Some are branching with only the tops still alive. I wouldn't worry about as long as it's growing.

That looks like a rainbow under low nutrient conditions.

It was sold to me as a rainbow.
Also I agree with some of the acros I have a few in my tank but honestly enjoy my stylo, poci and montis more.

I don’t think I would describe my tank as low nutrient system, I broadcast feed pretty regularly.
redsea A/B x4 a week
KZ polyp booster x2 a week
Reef Chili x2 a week

My nitrates always hover around 7ish.

thanks for the thoughts I’ll just leave it be for now

blasterman your too funny.
The pink and green or “rainbow” poci Ime is not one of the variants that create baby colonies all over the tank. It might be able to but I haven’t seen it happen in any tanks I have seen yet so I wouldn’t be concerned like I would with the green and sometimes the pink ones.

Let it be. This is tough coral
