How can you tell when you have a pod population that will support a fish that mainly eats pods?

Went to change my sump filter earlier and saw hundreds crawling, moved it over a chamber and added a new filter.

Look in the morning with a flash light preferred blue or red, if you see them crawling over the rock you have plenty.
Having them in the sock will tell already enough.
As soon as my night blues come on they start to come out and I see them all over my front and sides. I've also noticed a bunch of baby snails (the shells look like) lately.

Any way to remove from a filter without killing? Would like to take the old filter out.

Bravo!
What filter?
Filter socks?
If so cut holes in them so they won't get trapped.

I run either a piece of the big grey advanced polyifiber that I cut, or a piece of carbon pad, I could cut some small holes in.

Going to be modifying my sump area to add an algae scrubber as soon as I decide on lighting, so I'm open to ideas. I feel like I'm growing with my tank in this hobby again.
