I have a large refugium (15 gallons) in my sump but chaeto does not grow and I no longer want a bunch of detrius from the live rock rubble so I thought this might be an alternative. Plus there needs to be a way to get the pods to the DT.I don't have one. I think it is a good idea if you don't have a refugium. If you do, it is unnecessary.
They should self populate, providing that you don't remove all of them. At least that is what is advertised. I think there are other dyi designs but they don't look as nice. If I could get the cheato to grow that would be great for pods. I don't want to mess with phyto, it can increase nutrients in the dt and lead to problems. But how are the going to continue to populate in your sump? Are you going to feed them phyto?

The main return pump is the means for getting the pods to the DT. It is very effective. People worry that the pump will macerate the little guys. Perhaps a few, however, the vast majority will make it just fine. I have never fed my pods anything and they seem to proliferate both in the DT and the refugium just fine. Chaeto is not the only acceptable macro algae available for a well functioning refugium.I have a large refugium (15 gallons) in my sump but chaeto does not grow and I no longer want a bunch of detrius from the live rock rubble so I thought this might be an alternative.
