I don't have one. I think it is a good idea if you don't have a refugium. If you do, it is unnecessary.

I have a large refugium (15 gallons) in my sump but chaeto does not grow and I no longer want a bunch of detrius from the live rock rubble so I thought this might be an alternative. Plus there needs to be a way to get the pods to the DT.

But how are the going to continue to populate in your sump? Are you going to feed them phyto?

They should self populate, providing that you don't remove all of them. At least that is what is advertised. I think there are other dyi designs but they don't look as nice. If I could get the cheato to grow that would be great for pods. I don't want to mess with phyto, it can increase nutrients in the dt and lead to problems.

I would love to have pods growing in my sump but I dont have a refgium and no room for one, so I guess the only way to feed them would by phyto?

I have read a lot about pods and have come to the conclusion that they can be raised without a refugium or chaeto. Unless you have a hungry Mandarin like I do there are probably tons of them in your DT. I need to supplement my DT so am looking at some ways to do this. I moved a nice sized rock from my refugium to my DT yesterday and it was loaded with pods. I think they feed on detrius and just about any food source in the water column. If I knew what the plates in the RB pod hotel were made of I would make my own. If it works it seems like an easy way to raise and transport the pods from a sump to the DT.

Another idea I had was to just make a box out of egg crate material and fill it with small pieces of live rock. It could be populated and then shaken in the DT.

The main return pump is the means for getting the pods to the DT. It is very effective. People worry that the pump will macerate the little guys. Perhaps a few, however, the vast majority will make it just fine. I have never fed my pods anything and they seem to proliferate both in the DT and the refugium just fine. Chaeto is not the only acceptable macro algae available for a well functioning refugium.

I have one. I leave it in my fuge and every once in a while shake it into the DT to give it a burst of pods. Works well.
