I just received a shipment from pod your reef. It was shipped June 1st and it’s now the 6th. When I opened the box all three bottles are warm and there appears to be no life in them at all. The phytoplankton bottle is quite brown and the other 2 bottles of pods seem to have zero life. I can see a few pods suspended in the water column and some have settled to the bottom. Just wondering if anyone has suggestions as to what to do. Will they come back? Or are these guys goners?

Phyto should be green, not brown, thats dead.

If you see no moving pods, assume they are all dead(even though 99% of them you cannot see with the naked eye). If the adults are dead(the ones you can see), then assume they are all dead and do not put them in your tank.

Open the bottles, they should clearly smell bad if everything died.

I had a similar experience. First delivery was delayed by a day and arrived ice cold. Could not see any of the visible pods moving. Seller sent a second batch which arrived promptly and it was very easy to spot the moving adults in the bottle. Would say yours are dead. Phyto is definitely dead (I culture my own).

That’s what I thought unfortunately. I don’t know what pod your reefs policy is if I need to save any of this or if I should just dump it all out. I suppose I’ll throw them in the fridge until I hear back from them. Thanks you guys

I had the same experience, I think fedex misplaced a bunch of orders from pod your reef last week and they sat somewhere very hot for awhile which cooked the pods & phyto. They smelled really bad and under the microscope I saw nothing alive.

If you reply to the last email you got and let them know the order arrived doa they should replace it.

I am sympathetic to pod your reef, must be tough for a small company losing a bunch of orders like that. I don't know if fedex will reimburse for something like this.

You should reach out to Josh over at Pod Your Reef. He will get you the answers you need. When in doubt, reach out to the producer. ;)

Best,
Chad

I did reach out and he was extremely helpful. I tried pod your reef before I came here but since it was a Sunday they weren’t open. I was just hoping to get some help right away with what to do with them. Whether I could put them in the fridge or whatever the best course of action was. Josh was very helpful!
