Hey guys!
So I've been meaning to start a tank thread about my system where I would post pics and ask questions related to my tank, but I haven't really gotten to it yet. This however is kinda surreal so I wanted to share and ask if this is "normal".
A little over a week ago I went out to my LFS to buy some pods. I bought 2 x 90ml bags with live copepods. I have a goal that with time I will have a good enough pod population to keep a mandarin.
I put them in the refugium and it didn't take long before I saw some jumping around on the glass in the DT. This was also at the same time as a bunch of nassarius eggs were hatching.
From that day on I started to notice more and more white spots on the glass moving around. It took only a couple to a few of days before the entire glass walls were covered. Wherever I looked, there were small white things moving around. I thought there was no way that many pods in those two small bags. But they just kept becoming more and more. Eventually after a few days it was so covered I couldnt get myself to use the magnet cleaner anymore in case I would kill them. Most of the white spots are tiny critters moving around, jumping off the glass and swimming around in the water before going back to the glass. There are a few of them that also look like little worms of some sort, tiny tiny worms. I just thought that could be the snails that were hatching. A couple days ago I cleaned one stripe with the magnet cleaner, and the next day it was almost all covered up again!
I managed to take a picture tonight after the lights went out (they are everywhere all day long), not a good one, but decent enough and I wanted to share it and ask if this could really all be pods, and if an explosion in population like this is normal? This is only one of the corners of the tank, but they seem to jump off the glass and follow the current to this corner more.
When I light on them with a flashlight, some of them jump off the glass and start swimming. Kinda funny when I am moving the light as it looks like they are doing the wave from a football stadium.
I am starting to think maybe it's something else? I have no idea what else it would be, this is my first reef tank, but this seems so surreal that there can be so many thousands of pods from those two small bags already. And the wierd thing is, there is nothing in the sump at all!
At least my pair of clowns (my only fish atm) are enjoying this, I see them sometimes picking at the glass
What do you think?
This was the best picture I managed to take, can try again if needed.
