I seeded my tank with all sorts of pods from algae barn to get a good population going. All was well for a while. Added a new fish who became very territorial and my fish broke out in ick. So now I'm going fallow for 80 days. 30 days in and my tank is exploding with pods. My Purple Bonsai Acro wich has had tons of growth all of a sudden stopped and has next to no polyp extention and started to stn. Part of the colony still had good extention and color so I cut it off and removed the rest. I noticed on the underside of the main colony there was tons of some sort of pods. Few weeks later the good piece of bonsai started to look like crap. Again, tons of bugs hanging out on the underside of it out of the light. 1 other acro same thing but only on a white patch wich I assume is bite marks? I will try to remove it tonight and try get some pics.

125 Mixed reef (total system volume 225g)
Alk 8.3
Ca 430
Mg 1320
Po4 .03
Nitrate 10

Ps. Zoa garden starting to close up along with some others randomly around the tank. Not all of them though

Guessing these are the smaller, really fast moving pods that hang out under the plugs? I don't think you need to worry about those. I have tons of them, never see them on live flesh, and don't have acro issues.

Now if you spot a pod moving on LIVE FLESH, that is a different matter all together. That is a parasitic pod, likely Tegastes, that you would need to nuke with Interceptor.

Just had to Google tegastes and came up as red bugs. Definitely not red bugs. Went down that road years go. There clear and I think they are the ones that hangout under plugs. But they are deffinatly on live flesh underneath. I'm on the fence about using interceptor knowing it will nuke the pods and rule out that assumption only for the simple fact that I bought them... alot of them lol. Wanting a good feast for when My mandarin comes back. hopefully I can get a good pic and ID later.

Hear ya. Had to rehome my mandarin, as I tend to dose Interceptor at least once a year. Shame too; I miss that fish.

This is the piece that was removed. I dipped it and put it in a separate tank with other acros (same system though) and bam, Right back to it. Idk

Not good. Can't ID them for you sadly, but that strikes me as predatory. I guess there is a chance they are just scavenging weak/dying flesh (think maggots) but look very suspect.

Are they quick moving or slow?
Can you get a 10X or 40X photo? Maybe then run the image through google and see of you can get a hit.

That's as close as I could get. My only option I feel is to nuke the pods with interceptor unfortunately. I'll send a pic to algaebarn and see if they can give me some insight

while they can, its often temporary. Assure water flow not too strong and light is moderate

It was 380par where that coral was and I put lights at a 50% acclimation mode when I fist noticed a problem with zoas and a blasto. Flow isn't too strong I think. Mp40 on each side of the tank at 75%. Ramping up and down every 2 seconds. Just enough to get the polyps moving

May be a little much on flow and especially lights
Over the last three decades, there has been mixed feelings on light requirements for zoa but highest seems to be moderate higher in blue and uv

Most of my zoas are down low and off to the sides. Low flow and around 100 par.

Pods on compromised/dying/dead tissue like this is not conclusive. That is just scavenging. The earlier pictures SEEMED to show them on colored, healthy flesh.
They are on healthy tissue also. The whole underside. It was just easier to get my cannon to focus on them over the skeleton
