Pods questions

How do you get the pods out of the sock without dumping all the crude back into the tank.

Just rinse socks in a bucket full of clean salt water. They should rinse out for the most part. Then use a Sieve to strain out that water. I made one out of 50 micron nylon mesh then dump in with the rest....

Hey pdisner, I’m new to this. How do I contact you to order some pods. Thx

@pdisner just made it through all the posts (life got in the way). After my tank gets through the cycle and I get everything in order I’ll hit you up for some pods and phyto to get them started. Excellent info. Thank you for putting it all together

No problem. It’s my pleasure. I like to teach, especially accurate information. There waaay too much anecdotal advice given and I thought that actual Scientific and or University funded research. I’ve got more to share, but I have the same issue you do....NOT ENOUGH TIME IN THE DAY! But I plan to go a little more in-depth on species common in our hobby, feeds and some other little nerdy pod and rotifer facts. I think you’ll want to read that. I hope I can get it out soon, it’s great info. Knowledge should be shared....right ?

I clean them at a sink. I bring a small glass of tank water and place it next to the sink. As I carefully turn the sock inside out you'll find the little guys. I just tip the sock over and they fall into the glass.

Can you tell me the brand of sock you’re using? Wanting to know what it’s made of. Thinking of switching to nylon micro mesh.

It’s [email protected] or just tag me in a post and I get it on my phone unless I’m busy. But I’ll usually respond. I don’t know how the @pdisner thing got started. I just raise live food for my tank. 4 different live foods. I’ve gotten pretty good, I think, and other people I’ve shared with to get their cultures of their own started. Having seperate breeding tanks for your food avoids predation and allows the colonies to thrive. Then I dose my tank and refugium from that. I have a Mandrin that I have raised. He’s lo I g proof that you should always use live food. He likes enriched baby brine, in addition to the usual steady diet of pods. I was lucky to find another type of food he would eat just in case.

The whole live food thins started for me a while back as my tank was kind of bland. So it flourished as I started ti feed differently. Way better nutrition. I started feeding heavily to coax my three pairs of clowns to spawn.

I wanted to give a review on Paul’s customer service and it’s great he not only helps u when placing an order but will answer all the questions u have even if your not buying anything.

I was lucky to win a free bottle and placed an order and I’m very happy with my purchase you can see the life inside the bottle (some pods are barely noticeable with other brands I’ve purchased in the past) with Paul’s product you can see pods of all sizes.

It’s great to be able to support fellow reefers and get a great product while your added.

Thanks for everything Paul...

I actually don’t have a website. I’m not a company. Just one of u guys, but I like playing around with the microfauna. I think that they’re vastly underrated with the HUGE tasks they perform, then become a tasty nutritious meal for the next thing up the food chain!

What I do is help everyone start and maintain they’re own food source. I give you the tools and the supplies and your job is to maintain the culture ....

both c

both coral and pods eat the phyto. Two bags of pods will establish a population. How long until you get a stable thriving population depends on how much shelter, predation, and food they have. If you are looking for a mandarin know that there may be some boom/bust cycles as the pods establish, and you should probably wait several months. Its one of the reasons people warn not to get one until the tank has matured at least a year.

That’s why anyone who thinks that they need to boost their population of copepods, and to avoid any “boom/bust” scenarios, should culture them seperately, in their own habitat. It’s much easier to control their exclusive environment than just dumping a bottle in your tank every month or so. That get incredibly expensive and we all should learn how to do things cheaper. I culture several colonies of pods (a couple species), rotifers and the Phyto needed for staple feeding. They also feast on other things such as spirulina, flaked fish food, diatoms, bacteria and even rotifers but Phyto is their main course. Once one or two good colonies are going and stable and your density is about 1-2 copepods per mL, you can start harvesting on a regular basis. Then your mandrins will look like this!
