Should I treat for marine velvet? I’ve never had sickness in my tank and am very unfamiliar with treatments. My yellow tang and fox face have been hiding a lot and they’re usually out in front of the tank. The tang appears to be breathing very rapidly and that looks like a symptom of the velvet disease. So, should I treat for that now?

It’s a 75 gallon tank and there is a 5 gal sump. I put the decoration in and within 12 hours I had my first dead fish. 8 hours later I had two more and then the next day 2 more dead ones. Every day there is more death. How would I know if it’s a disease killing the tank? I just found my longnose hawkfish dead and here’s a photo but I don’t know how long he’s been dead.

I had a saltwater tank in the past and in four years only lost one or two fish. All this sudden death is new to me.

Right now, I have a dogface puffer, 2 tangs, Picasso trigger, green bird wrasse, couple damsels, flame scallops, starfish, urchins, and anemones. How come I haven’t lost any inverts yet?

I'm so sorry you are going through this.

Did you add any new fish in the last 2 or 3 weeks?

The fact that you haven't lost any inverts is one reason I think it is at least possible to be a fish disease. I would expect a contaminant that kills fish that quickly would also kill inverts.

Yes, my dogface puffer is barely eating the yellow tang is hiding in back towards the bottom of the rock breathing heavily. The puffer is usually a heavy feeder and the tang always is in the front of the tank swimming around. I see no physical differences in their appearance but will re-examine when I get home.

Hold on a second. You have a 75 gallon tank, with a 5 gallon sump, and 17 fish including tangs and a puffer???
If it's not disease that killed them its massive bioload and likely an ammonia spike.
17 fish is way to much for a 75 gallon tank.
The tank was loaded way to much way to fast.
In all honestly I don't think the plastic decoration had anything to do with it.

This is along the lines of what I am thinking, also. Some of these fish should show clear signs if it were velvet but what it sounds more like to me is either low oxygen or gill damage from ammonia.
I would also suspect that aggression could be a factor. Triggers and Tangs can both be very aggressive, especially in a smaller tank. I think it is likely that one of these killed a tank mate and started an ammonia spike.

I suspect you’re dealing with velvet and immense overstocking. With that many fish added without quarantine, the odds of you not having velvet these days is next to zero, unfortunately. Sorry you’re having trouble, slow down and treat the fish you have quickly per the instructions on the link above.

We need this answered before anything should be done with this tank.
What are your water parameters??? All the water params.

Nitrites
PH
SG
You shouldn't be just throwing a ton of crap into your tank just to do it. What are your numbers???

How long has the tank been set up? This is imperative to us suggesting your next course of action.

+1 on overstocking and high likelihood of some disease slipping in with so many fish without quarantine. that amount of fish alone even without disease in a new 75G would definitely result in many losses quick.
would be great if you can return some of the fish to the LFS and take it slow. Post any fish you want to purchase here before buying it and check what other members will advise on additions.

I think you guys were right about the velvet so I set up a quarantine tank and have that currently being treated. As for the display tank, I read that I need to let that sit for 70-something days and I’m wondering if I can put the carbon filter and Purigen back in there and also if I need to continue treating that tank with the anti-parasite chemical, or will the parasite die out over time with no chemical? I have anemones, scallops, starfish, and urchins in the display. Thank you, this has been devastating and wouldn’t wish it on anyone.
