You really should rule it out as much as possible though. There's plenty of other dangers, sharp rocks, sharp animals, parasites visible or invisible, flesh eating bacteria, high numbers of bacteria in general, chemical warfare of the corals themselves, electricity

Kids really shouldn't rub aquarium water in their face, with or without zoa's in it.
+1 on this. TEACH your kids about the tank. I have vermitids and god knows what else in mine. My Zoa are the least of my concerns when we have kids. I don’t anticipate them attempting to get in there and consume/grab everything they see.

Has anyone heard of severe flesh eating bacteria cases in reef tanks? (I'm sure the author must be correct, but this really got my attention!).

Yea I want a softie tank I don’t want a ton of Zoas maybe 3 or 4 frags.
3-4 frags is no more dangerous that the 20+ that I have. Unless you’re actively putting them in a blender it’s impossible to mess with more than 1-2 at a time anyway.

I know that V. vulnificus is often present but also that you are unlikely to get a serious infection unless you have a weakened immune system in the first place. Children's immune systems aren't fully developed yet though, so make of that what you will. M. marinum people definitely have gotten bad cases from aquariums from, who knows what else
