So I'm getting quotes to pull up some carpet and sand and polish the floorboards in one of the rooms of my house (not the fish room). I'm pretty sure I can keep the dust out of the tank by covering it with a sheet or blanket. Does anyone know if the airborne polish chemicals will upset my 50 gal LPS tank?

I guess it depends on what is in the polish but most likely, yes. Any type of chemicals entering your water has the possibility to react negatively with your livestock.

I think I might try to do more than cover it; problem may be more from chemicals which will be used (and which may eventually drift into room where your tank is) than from dust. So, any problem in sealing up tank using some plastic sheeting impermeable to chemicals and taping areas where it meets tank? I know this will compromise tank's gas exchange so might want to leave a hole at bottom with some type of absorbent material covering it just to be extra safe.

Adding a fan blowing air out of your fish room should help as well.

Good luck.
