Polishing saltwater

This may be a silly but I have an old canister filter which was used as the primary filter for my freshwater system. The freshwater has now been switched to saltwater system. Since my water doesn't quite have that suspended fish in air look, would it be ok to use this to polish the water with charcoal pads?

I like Seachem matrix carbon myself. Some carbons contain phosphates so be carefull.
