Was watching a video by BRS and they mentioned it and it’s honestly not something I’ve ever thought of doing. Suppose it would be pretty easy to drop a small pump in to kick everything up until it filters out. So what do you do?

I now clean my sump every 6 months to a year. I’m not recommending this but this is what I do at the current time.

if you can clean it regularly as part of a water change then that’s ideal, and good practice, and that’s what I did for the first 3 years of my tanks life. Now I’m on auto water changes so the schedule has changed

what do you use for you auto water changes?

I do it a few times a year with a cheap, D-battery powered handheld liquid transfer pump I bought at Northern Tool. It's not the best tool for the job because it can get clogged with sand and hard bits of detritus but it does work to suck out the majority of the detritus buildup in the sump. Just takes a little screwing around once in a while.
