I an a new reefer that would love to embrace automation and the Apex system, but I am a little concerned about all of the threads about inaccurate pH and salinity readings (though mostly salinity). However, there are a lot of very successful reefs being maintained with the Apex, so it makes me wonder how many people are getting accurate readings through careful placement and probe maintenance. People tend to post more about problems than successes, so I am hoping this might provide a more realistic portrayal of user experiences.

Thanks!

I do not think many reefers rely on their salinity probes. Controller based EC probes can have a lot of interference, as well as their constant state and being near equipment that can also create electrical noise. In any case if a salinity probe is important to your build i would suggest redundancy, with level sensors being the first step and the EC reading as a back up(turn off) not the other way.

I am in your boat and I was so excited to get Apex running on both of my tanks but then stepped back and went wait wow.. 200 dollars for salinity when so many people complain about it.

I have a classic and a junior now and I'm started to regret the classic thinking maybe just two juniors would be ideal to control several things such as my skimmer lights and thermometers.

There’s a lot more to the apex than pH and conductivity monitoring. I have a pH probe but don’t pay any attention to it, and don’t have the conductivity probe just because I don’t think it would be particularly useful (and I’d rather spend the money on something else). But that doesn’t mean the apex isn’t useful; I use the apex to control and monitor all my equipment.
