Anyone ever encounter one of these critters in your aquarium? And did you have trouble keeping snails?

We found this specimen, along with another on the bottom of a rock in our refugium a while back. Never really noticed any problems with snails.

I seen one in my tank the other day and looked it up on internet. Info I found on them is they eat snails and clams. I buy 50 snails every several months and remove empty shells every water change. This could explain why they don't survive very long.

A guy down the road from me has a small shop in his garage and had one just like that. We never did ID it. I don't think he lost any snails in that tank.

Obviously I'm not familiar with your tank, but the #1 reason most people lose their CUC like you describe is starvation. #1 by a wide margin in fact.

Could his be your case? (If you don't have quite a bit of excess algae in the tank for them, this is your problem.)

Yes I have found them before, they will kill every snail in your tank. Luckily if you know how, they're pretty easy to extract.

Scoop them off of your glass at 3 A.M with a cut-off coke bottle. Make sure you're ready, once the room light turns on you have only a matter of seconds before it runs off.

Here is one I found:

The one I posted in the pic earlier was approx 4" and was found w/another one that was a bit smaller. There were no snails in our refugium, so I'm guessing they must eat other things as well. Other residents in that tank were a mated pair of yellow coral banded shrimp, a couple of peppermints an rbta, an ocelleris clown and quite a number of large and small bristle worms.
