I have been using poly filter pads as my first step in filtration to catch debris and keep water clean since the beginning. However I am starting to realize how much it cost to replace these in two tanks. Are there any other substitutes that I can use to keep my water clear at a lesser cost? Regular filter pads?

I just use this (or whatever brand my LFS has if I'm there). Works well and it's dirt cheap considering how much you get out of it.
