hello i have a monti vericosa ? I think it only puts its polyps out a little durring the day, but extension all the way at night is that normal?

its the humpy one in the back

I believe they feel more safe at night and extend their polyps for feeding.

Explore the possibility that something Is nipping at It, After 6 months of being closed my 30+ head of Duncans suddenly started to open again after removing three Tangs.
I never saw any of them nipping but that Is to much of a coincident to Ignore.

in the wild it is completely normaly for most polyped hard corals to only fully extend their polyps at night. this helps protect them from predators within thier hard cal base casing. in the aquarum/hobby side some still retain this trate. some will eve revert back to the trade from stress even tho it was opening its polyps during the day prier. many things can cause this in hard corals. fish nipping at them "darf angles, large angels and others", moving the coral around too much and other issues that can irrentate the coral. fish may like to nip at one coral more then the another. once these irrentate are remove they can show a better polyp extension.

other issues can include water parameters, what are your water parameters?
livestock, what fish/creatures do you have in your tank?

T I have to agree with killinseed. Come over and pick up your undata and bring me a peice of it and will see if it does it in my tank :)

part two, fish related. i didnt say it but yes in the hobby side, hard coral do tend to stay open more in some tanks/environments. i have giving frags to buddies that show better polyp extensions in thier frag tanks then my main tank , during the day. which is always great to see in any tank. note: i have a dawf flame angle who i feel is some of the causes for polyps extions on some of my sps doesnt seems to bother any of my monti , ecrusting, plating/caps or digi style. i have thoughts on getting him out but i like his/her colors a lot.

does this mean the color will not grow? no, not at all it will still grow. but may not grow as quickly or show real good color due that the irretation.

in my case at night they all look great and polyp tention are great. its a great site to see when i turn the lights on after they have been off for a while. i person have some that show full PE during the day and not at night and other that are the other way around.

some more examples.
ORA neno green birds nest open all day , closed all night
ORA yellow fuzzy min polyps during day , all at night.
ORA red planet open only at night.
ORA rose milli some durnin the day , all at night.
ORA blue bottle brush just started open durning the day and i have had it for a while.
monits are all normal durning the day.

hightlighter on monits.
as its a monti , i would check for nudi's as well, but keep in mind monti nudis are small very very small. they will, if enough of the, would look like white puffy spots in the corner of edges of the coral and the coral would show skeletons in those areas where the nudis hang out.
