I have this 5 watts Tetra pond UV stored away for a while which I used on my 120g fresh water years ago and worked great. now I’m setting up a 80g reef tank. Can I use a pond UV in reef tank for algae prevention

I have not tried it but I did find this older thread that asked the same question... that response was a yes but not the same exact UV. I think the science is the same but maybe the concern would be from unit to unit in terms of the corrosion from salt water. How is it built, are there any metal parts, how is it sealed, etc... Also worth inspecting if it is used ... has the PVC deteriorated due to UV exposure? Is there a protective sleeve that needs replacing, etc.

I took it apart to see if it needed cleaning, and everything looked in good condition, the glass sleeve was very little haze but cleaned it up with paper towel. There is a stainless still on the inside. This is what I got from the web site-** Stainless Steel Reflective Inner Sleeve in the Body - Increases UV Exposure and Prevents Internal UV Degradation. I called the company and they couldn’t give me a answer to use for reef tank

When I adopted my 90 gallon reef, The previous owner had used stainless steel o-rings to connect certain tubes and pipes. I found that almost all of them had some degree of rest on them. I replaced them with the same... Not really thinking. in the three years since I have replaced all of those o-rings with something that was plastic or eliminated altogether.
I am also thinking about true stainless steel appliances. It is a common complaint that many refrigerators develop pitting AKA rust spots below the dispensers for the water and ice on the front of our refrigerator door.
In short... I would not trust that inside of a saltwater reef. Just my opinion..

5 watt prob wont help much, for that size tank you prob want 15-25watt minimum. I think jebao has cheap pond ones that people use on reef tanks, or if you want something more heavy duty/pricy you can go with aqua uv

They do. I just installed a Jebao 36 watt UV from Amazon, working great.
