I have a 14 year old yellow tailed damsel with what I believe to be popeye. It is only one eye, so I am guessing it is from an injury. He is on his second round of a mix of kanaplex and metroplex via focus and food. I have been treating for about a month now.

It started about a month and a half after starting to dose vibrant. I stopped doing for 2 weeks then after one dose, there was a significant enlargement of the eye. Now the eye area is translucent and you can see a few veins along with what looks to be puss under the skin, and is about the size of a pencil eraser.

Has anyone ever seen or successfully treated a condition like this?

Hi, welcome to Reef2Reef.

Ive never seen a case of Popeye that bad. I think based on the chronic nature and treatments you’ve already tried that you should euthanize this fish.
Enucleation, or removing the eye could be done, but you would need MS-222 anesthetic.

Thank you for your quick response. Unfortunately, he passed this morning after a power failure last night before I could catch him. 14 years seems like a good, long life though.

Indeed! I rarely have damsels live longer than about ten years.
