A number of folks have wondered over the years if corals might need the element neon. It turns out that it is very important.

The first sign of a neon deficiency is apparently a lack of red color in certain corals. With added neon, they give an eerie red glow when properly stimulated. In fact, with enough neon, the whole tank can take on a red hue.

I suggest that all reefers consider experimenting on their own by dosing neon. The easiest way is likely to be a gas cylinder and direct the outflow into a skimmer inlet. If you try it, be sure and take before and after photos of the tank so we can see the effect.

It really works! Here’s what I found with two different doses of neon:

What day is it? Oh, April fools!

Unplugging them would be my first suggestion. lol

I guess I moved to fast.....went to harbor freight to see if they had some smaller tanks of neon in stock. Turns out Larry sold me hydrogen and I blew my garage up. but 10/10 would do again for the corals.

Is research grade Neon at only 99.996% purity OK, or do we need the super duper "research plus" 99.999 pure stuff?

Depends on what that other fraction is. If it’s krypton, all the fish will be weakened and appear lethargic.

At first I had to look twice at who posted this then I thought "what the heck has Randy been reading" then I saw the pics. Hilarious!! Happy April Fools day!

RHF crap post best post. I kept thinking this has to be wrong, neon reacts with virtually nothing and would just float out of the tank, lol...
Happy AFD

Lol...honestly would try if it was a real product. I love the smell of my tank water. It sits at the perfect height to stick my schnoz in

Honestly I picking up what you were putting down until the photos...LOL!

Welp... it appears that I have been doing it wrong. Thank you. I am off to the gas supply store.
