Popping and Clicking in Mixed Reef

I’m probably going to find out it’s something really stupid like a dove snail caught in the MP10, but I’ve noticed this popping and clicking in my main display the last few days, and to me it sounds like the reefs do in the wild when you snorkel. It’s def not a pistol shrimp, I don’t think there are any nasties in the tank either.

Just wondering if it could possibly be my tank sounding like a healthy reef, or maybe hang about to see if I bow my head in shame tomorrow when I dig out that dove snail!

My blue/green chromis make popping and clicking sounds all the time. Took me awhile to figure that one out. It's tough to guess what is going on with your tank without an audio recording.

Is your tank nice and level? Do you have lots of baby snails?

If you can post a recording I think you'll get more accurate responses.

Snails will often do a little shimmy by twisting their shells quickly and it sounds like a pistol shrimp when they hit glass or rock.

sometimes a snail crawls under the powerhead wire which is lightly vibrating and causing the shell to click on the glass. The sound drove me nuts for a while until I figured out what was causing it.

It’s not snails doing their wiggles that I’m 100% sure of. I do have billions of baby snails in the tank, so maybe one has somehow in the powerhead. To me it sounds exactly like snorkelling over the house reef in the Maldives. I’ll try and do a recording tomorrow before I take the powerhead out and check that.

for me I mean not in the powerhead, I mean the snail crawls up the wire which is swaying so the snail shell taps the glass, when it happens all I hear is tap tap tap

I know with my MP10s, I'll get a clicking noise if a baby snail works it's way into a bad spot. Sometimes just turning the power off, waiting 15 seconds, rebooting - will send a little shell out of the vortech and the noise subsides.

Do you have hermit crabs they click their shells together! Another thing it could be is a mantis shrimp but there would most likely be other signs since you said it’s not a pistol shrimp. Turn off the equipment one by one because it could also be that.

I only have one hermit in there , it’s not him making the noise. Half the time he’s just sat on top of my conch waiting for a lift.

I get clicking and tapping noises in my tank. The larger hermits often tap the glass with their shell (you've said its not this) but my clowns make very loud clicking noises at the surface. I'm not actually sure if it's sucking air or biting the weir as that's where they do it.

It was the MP10. No baby snails in it, but gave it a bit of a wipe down and popped back in and the noise has stopped. I’m actually quite disappointed it was not my skills at recreating a healthy wild reef
