My puffer is in a qt n i did a large wc today .. Half the tank. After i started putting the new freshly mixed rodi water in the qt she started twitching n stayed to the bottom which she never does, but she didnt blow up. She is always to the top whenever im around. Ive never seen her twitch like tht before.. Wht might have caused it... The wc? Do u guys think she will b ok? N she is not breathing heavy at all but it has been hours and she is still at the bottom of the tank.

How long did you let the new saltwater mix before doing the water change?

I usually mix it right away and just put it in the qt. So not long at all.

K, so you can burn their gills if you dont let the salt mix in for a bit. The shortest amount of time I would wait is 4 or 5 hours and that's if I have an emergency situation. Most will let their's sit, mix and heat for 12-24 hours before use. This could be your problem. This is different from ammonia burn, so I'm not entirely sure of what to do to help him besides wait, watch and mix the salt longer next time.
[HASHTAG]#humblefish[/HASHTAG] will probably have better insight into what you could do to help him feel better.

Oh wow... I didnt knw that the salt had to be mixed prior n let sit... Thanks n j knw for next time! I just checked on her again n she is moving around now but still not to the top like she always is n doesnt even notice me but thanks again.

Anytime. I'm sure she will be ok, now you know :)

Yeah, even in an emergency situation you want to let the salt fully mix for 2-3 hrs before using it. Of course every salt is a little different, some brands dissolve faster than others. I probably go a bit overboard, but I like to let mine mix overnight (12 hrs minimum) before using it.

The only thing I can think you could do is try giving him a 1 hr bath using either Methylene Blue or Malachite Green (see below). Both help heal ammonia burn, so it might work on "salt burn" as well. I believe Petco/smart and even some Walmarts carry this product: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Kordon-Me...e-Prevention-4-oz-Treats-240-Gallons/48186437

Malachite Green/Methylene Blue: Treats ammonia burn, cuts, injuries.

How To Treat - Comes in both liquid and powder form, sometimes mixed in with another medication(s). So, follow the directions on the label. Best used as a 30 minute bath solution, but you also can treat with it in a quarantine tank. Aerate heavily. If you are using it in a bath solution, then it is also a good idea to treat the fish with nitrofurazone (active ingredient found in Furan-2 and Nitrofuracin Green Powder) once he is returned to the quarantine tank. Nitrofurazone is great for treating open wounds or sores.

Pros - Highly effective.

Cons/Side Effects - Depletes oxygen from the water. Malachite Green is considered “harsher” on fish than Methylene Blue.

Yes i for sure knw for next time to let it sit instead of putting it right away. But thankfully she is doing soooo much better today and back to her normal self n swimming at the top. Thanks so much :)
