SO i woke up to a dead Porcupine puffer and a Possibly Blind Dwarf lion. The back of the puffer looked mangled and his eyes were completely white and blind, like the old man on JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH, but both eyes and no magic worms. My larger Volitans is fine, and so is "lunch" the chromis i cannot capture, nor can the lion.

The Lion has white film on his eyes, one side looks like he scraped it, maybe go bit at. he is seemingly blind, so I have him quarantined with egg crate separating him from the powerhead, I also squirted some garlic in there to add to his immune system if that even works. Im using a 55 gallon tank.

They have lived together at a small size in the 75g for a while, and when they reached 4 inches I upgraded to a 150.

I also have a small case of ich, which i am in the process of planning treatment as well.

Im trying to rule out possibilities and come up with the best cure.

I also fell asleep mid paragraph, it is now the next day. THe dwarf seems to be less blind, and some pupil is showing through the cloudiness. He also noticed my hand which was awesome.

I have been looking up the symptoms to lionfish stings on fish, I am guessing they usually kill them, but there is not much or very well hid information on the actual stage a fish will go through upon injection. I do know what it did to my hand, so the human interaction part I learned first hand.

The other theory I have is this: I use Garlic xtreme for the chance that garlic is actually good. WELL, I stopped using it for a couple days, but still put a couple drops in my tank. Coincidentally, this was pre tragedy. Could the fish have a depleted immune system from the lack of garlic??? I feel that is the least likely, as my fish were fairly healthy. I have 3 aptasia that I just fed hot vinegar and they shriveled up, they were small, so i dont think they were the cause, but could have been. I dont know. Params are all good so I know it wasnt a spike of anything unless it was an overnight Grim reaper spike that went away without a sign, I have ruled out my cats as well since i got the new tank with a canopy, I did just lose a Calico koi to my calico cat yesterday, so I know it was them that snaked my damsels from my sump last year. I dont know, im bummed and so is the woman. Any suggestions?

Apparently i am the only reefer on the site with this problem lol.
Update: the dwarf reacts to light, but not my hand. He is very stubborn, when i needed him to move he would flare up and stay right where he wants, so i dont know if thats him being stubborn, or barely regaining sight. He hasnt eaten since this day, i try every evening with garlic infused krill, his favorite. I squirt garlic in the tank anyways.

My large volitan was in the same tank on the day of the tragedy, but he wont tell me what he saw.

Post your parameters and how long the new tank has been running for. Something strayed out of whack as two of your fish showed signs quickly. Also, stop squirting garlic directly into the tank, it should only be used as a food soak.

I tested the water, nothing was out of the ordinary. I have like 3 aptasia that sprouted out of a rock that I hosed off and sundried for 2 days and that is the only thing that is OOTO. not to sound like I know what it wasnt, but the water is extremely stable with my chaeto and skimmer always keeping up with things. i always add one critter a week when I get multiple things to not shock the tank, and during this incident, nothing was added for a month previous. im pretty sure by the lions eyes that it was a fight, but with no info on the symptoms, im stuck wondering. The lions eyes look bit, not off or punctured, just the lens part...now it could be some kind of fungi or infection if the puffer did get him back. I dont think a parameter change would make the puffers back look like it did, the chromis was actually eating his flesh.

I will stop dosing garlic in the tank, although I have heard it helps them get it in their system if they dont eat.

I don't have a predator tank so I can't really chime in with much. But I can say this, maybe try editing the post? I had a really hard time understanding what was going on. I think I get the gist, but seems like a case of too many words and not enough information.

How long had the two affected fish co-habitating? Are there any other fish in the tank beside the large volitan and chromis? Did you notice anything strange with the fish prior to this incident? Pics of the wounds and the eyes or the still living lion would help. Just trying to get some more info so you get some more responses. GL!

Well I woke up one day and....

My Puffer was mangled and my lion was blind.
Water was clean and the others were fine.
I do not know if they got in a fight,
But the puffer was dead by the end of the night.
The lion still blind went to quarantine
And Im left wondering, Was the pufferfish mean?
The lion not once showed signs of aggression
And the puffer has always been one for regression.
No one will tell me what happens to fishes
When Lion spines stab them; on people its vicious.
Not deadly to most, but stings to high heaven.
Im guessing with fish its that bad times seven?
Where can I find scientific reports
That say more than "A lionfish HORTS?"

yeah, didnt mean to make a poem but it came out that way so I rolled with it. It said what needed to be said I think haha. :)

I would imagine a lionfish sting on a fish is deadly. they are after all preds. certain fish may be less sensitive to it, but I would think it kill or severely maim most if not all fish. you said you had a recent bout with ich too right? could be side effects of the medicating or the disease itself? are there still medications in the water that the fish should not be in for too long?

I do Hypo salinity, I dont ever use the medicines, never had to, something I must have overlooked got put in the tank, or it could be the same stupid rock that the aptasia survived on that brought it. Really thought 2 days in full sun after a day of hose water would have killed everything, my rock was white when I put it in the tank. I just ordered some Ich treatment from kent when i got some salt. THe reef safe stuff, Im going to test it in quarantine with my anthelia lab rat frags, the lion, and a snail and a hermit. I also tossed in a tiny starfish and some live brine. If it does its job and all survives, then I will do it in my display. Does that sound like a good idea?

I cant really quarantine my volitan without a bigger tank, or I would Just do the HypoSalinity again.

:sidenote:My aptasia "problem" is in the process of resolving. I do hot vinegar squirts every day which has greatly reduced them, and I also ordered a Berghia that I already found an aptasia infested home for when mine are gone. I had them on my Acan, and all I did to control them was to take it out of the water, heads retracted of course, and I literally superglued a thin layer over the entire rocky part. When the glue dried it looked like an Ice Cube with a funny hat, but not a single sprout of aptasia! I would have gone with peppermints, but yeah. That would have only resulted in a fat lion fish since he perches right on the stupid aptasia rock for 23hrs a day.

GREAT NEWS!!! My Dwarf is no only half blind!!! It had to have been a fight. His right eye has a chunky look to it, like the lens got puffer toothed...He is now reacting to my hand like he used to. I would hold my hand up to him, then spread my fingers. He would do the same with his fins back at me :) I really hope this flippin ich stuff comes in so i can get that off of him as well.

I never though id be happy something was half blind, but compared to his earlier symptoms this is an improvement. He has not eaten yet, but i feel that he wants to so I may try this evening. He has a 75 watt light that i normally use for Chaeto, but have sold most of it except a clump which i moved to the display. If I can Cure him within a month I will be very happy, since I am moving all my water 8 blocks...Ughness supreme!

Gl. It always seems like so long when you are waiting for them to start eating again. That will probably be the turning point. If the ich isn't too bad I don't think I'd start treatment until he was eating regularly again.

Ok, i held off an extra day, plan to feed in the morning...figured a little hungrier and a little more vision might be better.
I think i one eye is permablind, he would probably be fine in the display after all is cured and the ich is gone.

I wish the vet had a fish unit, id take him and my volitan there while i move...lol. if only.

"Fish boarding now available and free rabies shots for your dogs!"

I do teeth trimming on ppl whos puffers (for some unknown reason) havent been getting their hard shell diets, maybe i can get the vet into reefing and talk him into it :)

Well Eating is pretty tough for a lion when they are in a state of rigor mortis.

Dead Fish...Dead Thread. BAd morning.

May you rest in peace Mufassa III. You were my favorite fish in the world. We will miss your cheery greetings.

Now onto a peaceful tank I guess, as much as I love the lions, I think a change of colors may cheer us up.

So long fishy
