Porcupine puffer in reef tank

Hi guys I am setting up a 150gal reef tank and was wondering if I could add a porcupine puffer because I really like them. Also what do people who have kept them feed them for the most part.

No they aren't reef safe. They eat most inverts and many times some corals. You could put one in there, but it wouldn't be a reef tank for very long.

They also get over a foot long and cost a fortune to feed when they get bigger ....but they are like puppies....they eat everything that they can get into their mouths....and anything they can bite off.

I have a 3inch Porcupine Puffer for about 2 years in my reef tank and eats nothing but what I provide him (defosted krill). He doesn't even look at the snails that I have or my hermits. He sometimes go and smell my large green striped hermit and sees what he can take from him. Other than that he's never touched any corals or CUC. Just added a spikey box puffer too. Adorable!

Some people get away with it.. Most times though they take nips at corals and hermits/snails. If you have any expensive coral in the tank its just not worth the risk, IMO. But its 100% up to you if you'd like to give it a shot, Might work out for you. Good Luck!!

I know a guy who has successfully raised one in his reef, the key is to train them at a young age... it's doable but with like anything else in the hobby, there is a risk.

I agree. I think it's because I gotten my puffer at a very young age and fed him by hand that he doesn't bother anything else.
