hey all,

does anyone use poret filters in their sumps? just wanted to hear your experiences with this and if holds up over time? is it easy to clean? realiable?

Would seem like a pain to clean. No experance with them. Filter socks I think would be better.
 
as per the video on fish2water.co.nz, you only need to bang it on a wall and rinse it out... then reuse... seems easy enough and apparently they work long-term without degradation - hence i wanted to confirm this with someone :p
 
Yes sponge filters are great to have around easy to put in a sump and pull out for a quick Qt tank. When my fish room was set up I used them a lot easy to run a bunch of tanks with one big air pump
 
Bacteria will only grow with enough food. So the bacteria will only colonize to the point where there is enough Ammonia food for them. You can place a lot of substrate for them to colonize but they will not full the whole area with bacteria. The rock in the aquarium will process most of the ammonia that the tank produces as the bacteria there has greater access to it. This is what we found out when Live Rock came into the hobby.
