Hi just received my phytoplankton system and have grown my first weeks supply. Very easy and very well done.
One interesting fact though. The companies info stresses the need to be as sterile as possible when setting up the culture and “ harvesting it.” Even so far as to say not to use any equipment that has been used in the DT.
My question is, does this mean that the phyto has a very short lifespan when poured into the tank? Otherwise, wouldn’t it continue to reproduce in the DT instead of having to culture it separate.
If that’s the case then it’s one more example of how our tanks can’t reproduce ocean conditions.

The sterile part is that you risk competition from other algaes, getting rotifers or other phyto predators into your culture, or this weird thing where the phyto begins to clump.

For example, I accidentally contaminated a culture before and got hair algae, as well as extreme clumping of the phyto to where it looked like dirt.
