Got this guy about a week ago.. He seems to be eating fine but today found some white patches when I got home from work today on the top of his body. Is this something that needs treatment and if so with what? Thanks

Yup that’s a nasty infection, something pretty common in CBB.

Removal in to a quarantine with NFG would be ideal (nitrofuracin green) for 14 days.

In the interim you can use kanaplex, metroplex, and furan 2 in a quarantine for 14 days. You could do this instead, but NFG is much more aggressive in treating infections. Antibiotics are notoriously slow acting in fish.

thank you for the advice I have a quarentee system set up but it's still cycling can I use prime to help with the ammonia while treating with NFG

You can use prime with NFG yes. I’ve always used biospira and an ammonia alert badge for this purpose. NFG is best used in sterile (unused) QT’s but it’s hard on the biofilter so I stock extra biospira as well :)

This is past first stage and although common, not normal for fish. I would add treatment, but Ford Family covered it precisely.

thanks all for your help. I was able to catch him last night and put him into QT. I did dose with Furan and metro but got home today from work and found him dead. RIP litte guy... But I certainly appreciate the advise. Would it be wise if I got another butterfly to preemptively dose with metro and furan2?

I am sorry for your loss. They deteriorate quickly with infections, it's not uncommon for them to be "gone" before you notice a serious infection.

It's up to you, I use metro prophylactically because it covers uronema and brook as well as some infections. I use it in conjunction with copper to hammer ich and velvet. These guys come with velvet a lot, and they suffer from infections and uronema quite frequently as well.

I would not pre-treat as they can build an immunity but moreso, I would do future doses at 75% of recommended as you want to treat for useable gallons. Useable gallons is the total of tank (example.....90 gallon tank MINUS rock and décor had about 76 useable gallons, so treat for 76 gallons, not 90).

In buying a new one, assure it eats or shows an interest in food, no infections or abrasions on body, breathing normally, if it is active swimming or just hiding in a corner and it is uniform in body mass, not sucked in or thin looking and eyes are flush, not sunken in. What I listed is likelihood of a fish that is of risk to introduce into your system.
