I recently started a new reef tank and by recently I mean tye full system has been running for 2 days. I used live arga special grade reef sand and dry BRS pukani Rock. Looking around in the tank tonight iv noticed small purple spots appearing on some areas of the rock. Is coraline even possible at this stage? What could it be? I attempted to get a picture but it's not super clear.

If it's hard and doesn't rub off that's probably Coraline algae! I had the same thing happen in my tank, but we determined that it probably wasn't new as it doesn't grow that fast, it just became more noticeable.

It was probably already on the rock and showed up better after being in the water.

It looks more like Cyano. It does not appear to be encrusted like coraline algae. If you have a syringe, use it to blow water directly into the patch. If it disperses, Cyano, if not; coraline.

It will take a few months before you start to really see new Coralline growing. Looks like nice rock. Have you started a tank thread? If not you should, it's nice to look back and track your progress and see how far you've come.

Discoloration of the rock.
It can be some kind of algae but you have to show us some test results to see where you are on ammonia, Nitrite, PH, maybe Nitrate too.
ALK, CAL and MAG aren't yet important in the cycle process.

Discoloration on the rock or old coraline that you just now noticed being it's in the tank.

Like I said I didn't even think it was possible at this stage. My ammonia is higher than my Red Sea kit test for I believe. Nitrites and nitrates are present but still low and I believe my ph was 8.7 last night. The tank has only been running for 2 days.

It's just in the rock.
Don't worry just keep on cycling. :D

So I think iv determined it was definitely on the rock before putting it in my tank. All of the rock has it. I even found it all over the
10lb of rubble I have that never went in the tank. Has to just be the rock or old algae maybe? I got a better shot of some on a piece of the rubble.

I saw the same with Pukani rocks. But my rocks were kept one week in bleach solution and another week in frequently changed boiled water. And those spots appeared - I dont think is possible to be something organic, but rather some chemical reaction.
Last time I checked coraline wasn't doing great in tap water at 60°C and bleach :p
