Hi everyone.
I've been looking to stock one of my tanks with diserable macro. In my search, I was looking for a vendor that ran a fishless system to avoid accidentally bringing in fish parasites or disease. I know best parctice is to QT everything, but this isn't my primary reef tank and I wanna keep things low cost.
One of the vendors I spoke with made this claim, which seems suspect to me:
" Macro algae can't survive without fish so I have fish in all my system There are organics that you can mix to create chemicals such as nitrates and phosphates. But you cannot find these in the ocean without fishes in the ecosystem. The very core of their nature is that they are from these areas in the reef where fishes live and no one is there to dose chemicals into it like so manmade fish tank. Besides the fact that you'll be spending more money doing a fishless system trying to dose chemicals to keep macros alive."
I have successfully been growing mirco algae with F2 forumla and no fish for almost a year. I don't under why macro, even calcifying alage, would NEED fish. Why couldn't you just ghost find with raw shirmp or flake food?
Second, am I on the track? Should I be concerned with finding a fish less vendor?
If this guy is wrong, should I still order from him. He has good prices... Lol.
Thanks everyone!
