possible paint in my tank.

I saw that you can use coffee filters or other filters they sell at hardware stores to siphon water with paint in it. I would put one of these at the end of a hose and siphon the water through it.

Excellent suggestion!

What do you guys think about the rock over 300 of live rock. If I have to replace that I'm looking at 500 plus

Well since its obviouslt an oil based paint, would have just disolved in the water otherwise, start a siphon into a bucket that goes into several filters, then have a return pump in the bucket putting the water back into your tank, keep changing the filters as they fill with paint. If you scrub the rocks with a nylon brush you should be able to suspend and clean out most of it

I may just be OCD, but I'd start over.

Rock is totally saveable, just give it a muratic acid bath, followers by a LC soak.

You can siphon out into filters all day, but what about the inside of plumbing, pumps, wavemakers, sand, the insides of the rock... list goes on. It seems to me that continued leeching well be a big issue.

I hate being the Debbie downer, but it's better than replacing fish for them to die all over.

Ok

I'll give this a try

I have been meaning to hard plumb the tank. I'm going to pull all the rock and clean it. I'll soak all the equipment in vinagar and scrub it all down.

I just can't believe this. I'm so sad about my eel for the most part. He was great, he would let me had feed him and clean the inside of his mouth. Such a nice fish:(. I'm well over 4000 in just fish loss not to mention all the work to get it back up

It's a terrible thing to have sudden loss in this hobby especially since it was none of your fault to begin with. In my honest opinion your taking the correct route.

There are several threads here on acid washing rock and following it up with a phosphate absorbing soak. Here's one from my local forum-https://www.reef2reef.com/threads/curing-dry-rock-process-review.241614/

vinegar bathing all equipment is a great idea, as well as the tank it's self , scrap the sand unless you feel comfortable with rinsing it (I'd give it a shot atleast)

It sucks, and is a long road to recovery, but in the end is peace of mind that future animals will be safe and knowing the system is clean.

Unfortunately, people can be malicious - even family members. I remember reading a thread awhile back where a father-son got into it and the son poured a bunch of bleach into a large system. Killed almost everything in the tank. It got ugly - the son was kicked out of the house, arrested, etc.

Most of us have tempers to a varying degree, but you really gotta just walk away & go cool off before doing something you'll later regret. It's hard because you may feel weak & disrespected, but how many people wouldn't be serving long prison sentences if they had just walked away??
