I guess it’s all how you look at it in terms of function. Primary would be the temperature prob on the heater itself whether internal/external and secondary in line of defense would be the said ranco controller.

People never listen, and they don’t think their 1 or 2 degree swings matter. My tank health pre and post ranco are night and day, temp stability is a huge huge factor to a stable and healthy tank ime.

Even after the inevitable (heater, power outage, stray voltage, ato and doser) catastrophe happens 75% easily still refuse to apply redundancy. It’s not buying $$$ apex necessarily. It’s a $12 tam rio grounding probe, $80 thermal controller, $100-125 PC battery up for a fraction of the cost. I think about the monetary part although it’s definitely more so my time invested and sentimental attachment as I’ve had my creatures awhile. The “priceless” stuff.

Bayite tempature controller is another alternative! It is super easy to use!
