Possible to keep two Moorish Idols?

I actually have been told that the fish do best kept in pairs. I've read where people added a second adult later with success but I've never tried and and likely won't.

Mine seems content on his own and I would hate to do something to jeopardize that. Perhaps buying two at a time would increase the odds? No experience mixing them so I am admittedly far from an expert.

I should have done that to begin with. I added mine about 10 days ago.
May not be too late but honestly that could be a very bad idea, I break all sorts of rules in this hobby.... But I haven't broken that one lol

If you try it you had better have a back up plan and methinks a moorish idol in all of its fragile glory is probably not the best fish to experiment with. Although one could argue that putting mine in with 7 Angels, a mag foxface, a yb hippo, and a nasty Achilles tang was a bit of an experiment. In my defense I added them within a month of each other and aggression is spread out what little there is.

I have experimented with leopard wrasse and Achilles tangs (I have two currently in sep tanks) to some degree but I had some experience and strong logical suspicions that I would be ok- plus I had a swift plan b if necessary (other tanks).

As I said though I don't have any suspicion or experience, nor the knowledge of this species that the other two respondents probably have. My success is just as much dumb luck and buying from divers den as it is my skill and experience keeping expert level fish over the years.

I've only had mine 3 months or so, I would hardly call that a "success" yet. He's doing great, fat as a balloon and eating well, disease free, and acting fantastic but it's an idol...

I have only seen a new moorish idol added to an established one a couple of times, so hardly a major sample size, but when I have seen it the established moorish idol just demolished the new one.

So here's what happened. The one I mentioned in this thread died while I was on my honeymoon. While I was still on my honeymoon, I sourced a pair of Idols. They came a few days after I came back. Within three days the female died. She seemed super stressed and stopped eating. The male seemed OK. The place I ordered from, sent me a new female a week later. There was no issues when I added her. Not sure if it's because they are different sexes, remembered each other ( I know that's probably doubtful) or maybe the male wasn't alone long enough. Either way, they are inseparable.
