Thank you for viewing and or reading. I am new to the hobby and have started a 10 gallon reef tank. If I use any incorrect lingo please correct me. I am eager to learn and can take constructive criticism. I currently have a nuvo marine 10 gallon tank and am running it with a kessil a80, Eshopps nano protein skimmer, and hydor pump 240gph. Inhabitants: one Rainbow Rose Bubble Tip Anemone, and one Capnella.

Would it be happier if it were higher in the tank? Also what would you call the little rock it is on? I am not thrilled with how it looks (I know that isn't the biggest thing to be concerned about). Is there anything I could do? Am I supposed to leave it there? Please remember this is my first soft coral, so any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!!

It should be ok in the bottom of your tank, it's the RBTA I'd be concerned about in a tank that small.

Leave it there until it opens. You can move it up if you want, but im sure it would be ok anywhere in the tank as long as it gets good flow.

The only dumb question is one that isn't asked! Welcome to the hobby and to R2R! Let us know if you have any other questions, I'm sure there's at least one of us always willing to help out a fellow reefer!

Welcome!
To answer the question of what it is on, yes, that is called a frag plug. Personally I hate them and always remove if possible. However, softies are much harder to remove without injury. Looks to me like you could carefully cut the frag plug away with bone cutters. However, those guys are also hard to keep in one place if not mounted or attached to rock. If you have a hole to set it in without the plug, that would work and it will eventually attach itself.

Watch the bta carefully. In a new set up, nems do not always do well. If this is a first and it is only 10g, I would stick with the larger softie you have and maybe some easy mushrooms. So many colors and great for getting your feet wet in the hobby. Get tank stable and maintenance down and then think about moving on up the difficulty corals.

Thanks to you all! The plan right now is to wait six months and add some mushrooms. After that I'll reassess. Also thank you for explaining the frag plug!
