Possum wrasse has a raisin on head

I woke up this morning to my possum wrasse having what looks to me to be an abraison on his head. His only tank mate is a Bangai cardinal and some snails in a 10g. They get along find and rarely actually interact. He did not have this mark before lights off. He ate fine this. Morning and I didn't see a change in his behavior. I've been fighting green hair algae and so have been dosing h2o2. Other than that it's just 2 part dosing (3ml a day). I did a 2 gallon water change probably 2 days ago. I have kanaplex should I get neoplex? I assume it's just kanamycin vs neomycin.

Correct and while kanaplex may work, neoplex is easier on this type of fish

Is it a bad idea to use a plastic bucket for this (like the home Depot type)? Does the plastic absorb the medication? I'm trying to think about options that I can hear and easily cover. I also have a critter keeper. Otherwise I'll run out and grab a 5 gallon or something.

I will check my LFS for neoplex when it opens in an hour, otherwise it looks like it's a few days out at best. At that point am I better just going kanaplex?

You can use kanaplex. They are quite close cousins. I would say a glass 5 gallon container would be better - like a small tank (which should not be expensive) - as compared to the bucket.

My LFS does have neoplex but it's about 30 minutes drive away. Is it worth going and getting it instead? The price doesn't matter, just want to be sure there's a tangible benefit for the drive.

In my opinion - there is no reason - perhaps @vetteguy53081 or @Jay Hemdal have a reason. Generally I find kanaplex to be 'less toxic' overall than neoplex.

Ok gonna run get it now and then transfer him when I get home. I threw some filter floss in my 10g this morning, or I could put the filter sock (2 days old) or I could put some small live rock rubble in the qt... What's my best option? Maybe just leave the floss till morning and transfer it over?

Or should I just plan on 20ish percent water changes each day before dosing?

In my opinion - there is no reason - perhaps @vetteguy53081 or @Jay Hemdal have a reason. Generally I find kanaplex to be 'less toxic' overall than neoplex.

Kanaplex seems to have more toxicity issues than Neoplex does, but it is species-specific. Kanamycin should be dosed at 50 to 100 ppm every 3 days for 3 treatments, with a 50% water change prior to each subsequent treatment. Neomycin is dosed at 66 ppm every 3 days for 3 treatments.

That said, since this injury occurred overnight, it is too soon to know if there is a secondary bacterial infection (yet).

If the product is 100% Kanamycin, that works out to be a dose of 67.5 mg per gallon. From my reference, the middle of the dose range is 75 ppm. That works out to be 284 mg/gallon. However, that reference (Noga) also states that water changes are needed if dosing every three days. The issue is then, how long does it take Kanamycin to degrade in a tank? I don't know that. For sure, you won't be overdosing it though. Trouble is, many products contain binders and excipients....

Yeah I'm kind of shocked in the sense that kanamycin definitely doesn't last 7 days for selection in bacterial culture. Not sure about neomycin. Anyways I went with the labels suggestion for now and I can change it if need be. The content label says that it's about 47% neomycin sulfate.

Should I darken out the back of the tank to avoid degradation from the sunlight.

What should I put in for bio filtration? I'm planning on putting some filter floss that's been cooking for ~18 hours in the main tank tomorrow morning. Should I add some LR rubble?

Second question, he would normally sleep in the rocks, I was hoping he would sleep in the pipes but he doesn't seem interested. He's just kind of laying on the heater from time to time... I don't think it's sickness as he looks fine most of the time, I think he just wants to go to sleep. Is there a good option here? For wrasses that sleep in the sand I used to put a little tupaware of sand in. Is there a parallel things for the rockwork sleepers?
