Hello reef2reef,

Its my reefs birthday! well my system has been running in one form or another for a long time. I have had my merletti colony for ten plus years, and it has survived every type of crash imaginable. At the onset of the last crash, I decided to document the recovery month to month. Just so I had something to look back on to see progress was being made and what I was doing was working. Even after so many years in this hobby I still struggle with patience! Especially when I know things don't look their greatest.

6-12 months before series begins as a reference.

I mistakenly added dry land mined uncured rock to the tank thinking I could pull the old out after the new was colonized in bacteria and slowly pull out my old old old rock.

Red planaria have taken advantage weakened system and population exploded VERY quickly. Despite running carbon killing this many at once took out many fish and corals that survived the mini cycle. I am using this as my start date.

This is what I was left with.

The Algae battle is in full swing. These following pictures were taken after picking it off rocks and glass.

The hair algae has finally lost its foothold. I might have waited to long to add a snail. one trochus caused this shift in dominate algae.

Happy Birthday!

It is , finally to the fun part of watching it grow in.

6 month update. Moved the tank back in February which stunted most of the sps growth. They finally started taking off again last month. Please excuse the algae... Been kinda lazy.

And that is my last picture of this tank. With the new build I decided to consolidate instead of fixing what needed fixed.

Here is everything (other than the fish they got traded) in its new home.

All in all looking at how long recovery took. I think the next time the tank crashes (knock on wood) I will just start over.

Fighting to reclaim that rock from algae with the limited stocking suitable for that small tank was just too much work.
