I set up a 120g with a 40 breeder sump, 100 pounds of dry rock (was live rock that was full of aptasia so I put it thru an bleach and acid bath) that finished its cycle about 2 months ago. After my cycle I turned my skimmer on and it’s been pulling a bunch of skimmate ever since. The only thing I’ve added to the tank so far is a clean up crew. The reason for that is my phosphates were abnormally high (.75 with a Hanna low range kit)(Nitrates 25 on a salifert kit). Figured I needed to fight the phosphates and get them in line before I add fish and Coral that I’d need to feed l, which would compound the nutrient problem. As of today I’m getting a reading of .19. So I had a big container of phosguard from my last tank so I’m using that in a bag that’s hanging under one of my drain lines. I’m just about done with my phosguard and I’m going to order some GFO and run it in my BRS Reactor. Haven’t been running my lights because the GHA was out of control when I did turn them on for a week, which I would expect with my nutrient levels.

I guess my question really is, am I doing the right thing by waiting it out and getting these phosphates down? I’m starting to get impatient and just tired of looking at this water box full of rocks.

Are you planning to run with any chaeto in your sump? Now would be a great time to get that established and growing, so it can outcompete any algae that might want to grow in the display tank.

Yes. I actually just grabbed a 33L to run as a remote fuge. I just have to drill it, get some rubble and cheato.

Plus I’d like to seed the fuge with pods and get the population up before there’s any predators.
