I just went on a four day vacation and one of my tanks is having some problems. I've included everything from the long-term history up to today, organized so that parts can be skipped.
Long Term History: about 20% of the rock, the bta, the corals and the fish (2 clowns, flame angel, dottyback) came from an existing 40g setup that was switched to this 75 g about 2 months ago. The rest was dry rock that was added (pre-cycled) at the switch. I could not keep the sand in the old tank because it was a dsb, so the new tank is glass bottom. The skimmer (reef Octo hob), the powerheads, and the marineland are new. There is no sump. I don't know the rest of the history of the old tank, but this one has been doing well all things considered.
Short-term history: I did a 20% wc andaI left for vacation with someone caring for the house. Unfortunately my instructions were not clear or it was information overload (there are 14 tanks, needless to say I am not complaining about the help at all), and this one got fed probably a lot of a fish/mysis/vitamin mix for three of those four days and there was no water top off.
Last night: I got back last night and the skimmer was not running due to the water level - the weather took a turn here and the heat has been running more than I expected. I checked the sg - is was up to 1.029 from 1.026, so I topped off a little and planned to check on it in the morning.
This morning: one of the soft coral rocks had tumbled over onto the coral. It is gooey and dead.
Green star polyp is looking brittle and closed as well (of all things)
BTA is looking sickly (about half of its tentacles are curled in and shriveled), it's hard to see here:
The water is cloudy, parameters are at:
8.4 pH
0.25-0.5 ammonia
0 nitrites
0 nitrates
Fish are fine, if not content and well-fed. Mushrooms look good, ricordia is happy.
Am I overly concerned here? Should I do a water change and let things settle out? Put some ammonia neutralizer in? I'm particularly worried about this anenome. I pulled out my usual pound of GHA per usual this morning, but I'm a little hesitant to do anything else right now. I'm not ZsWithTheNems or ZsWithTheCorals for a reason, I've stuck to fish only until this tank.
