Maybe this clarifies.

To convert from mg/l to ug/l which is converting ppm to ppb you can simply move the decimal over 3 places. For example- any reading that is .016 ppm or mg/l (milligrams pr litre) would translate to to 16.0 ppb or ug/l (micrograms pr litre)


To convert phosphorous to phosphate you would first take care of the conversion factor which is decimal place related. Then you would do the math conversion which is roughly a factor of three.


Take gdemos value of phosphorous for example which was determined by the ICP to be 5.26 ppb.

This converts to .00526 ppm after moving the decimal place to the left three spaces.

Then the conversion to phosphate gives a value of .016ppm which is almost three times the value of phosphorous.

I think the confusion comes from this in my post "Your reading would be 20ppb so maybe your meter is off? Or Triton is off?" - I was referring to his statement that his Hanna ULR reads "0.06" frequently. I assumed that to mean 0.06 Total Phosphate, which is roughly 20ppb. :smile:
 
Yup. That is where I saw the confusion. So .06 ppm total phosphate on his Hanna converts evenly to 60ppb phosphate not 20ppb. (If we were to express it in ppb)
 
Again, for others that may be confused reading this, phosphorous to Phosphate is different than converting something by units of measure- ppm to ppb.

1ppm = 1000ppb
The number of parts-per billion xppb is equal to the number of parts-per million xppm multiplied by 1000:
xppb = xppm · 1000

Example: 7ppm is equal to 7000ppb:
xppb = 7ppm · 1000 = 7000ppb
 
I've always taken: (phosphorus Hanna ulr x 3.066)/1000. = PO4 ppm
 
So in my case my Hanna ULR (which measures phosphorus and could be a poor batch of reagents) typically reads from 14-23. I will say it is temperamental and clearly differs from Triton.
 
Results are in. Like most, everything looks ok but Li is high like most. I'll probably dose a little k to her it up around 400.

I would recommend trying to get some Vanadium, Nickel, Zinc, Molybdenum and Manganese in there too. :)

Thanks, but frankly, I have no idea what any of those do and no way to measure these things, so I'm reluctant to start putting these things in my tank.
 
NO ONE with a high barium result?

10 percent water change bi weekly was using reefers best from korallen zucht, after many problems have changed back to red sea blue bucket.

the plague of barium continues! I have since taken out 2 heaters that were rusting, completed 3 250 litre water changes over 3 days, and my corals have transformed.. Polyp extension and nice colors literally changed overnight.

vanadium and nickel are from a jebao magnet that i used to put a pump onto the weir. I believe so anyways as this was the only thing i changed since the previous icp test.

Barium could be coming from the heater, but other people with aqua medic heaters and with the same rusting, have no traces of barium... So i've sent off some RO water for ICP test to see if the barium is in the RO water, if it isn't then I'm really stumped and will probably never find the cause :(

ive got near identical results. planning to do anything with the Br? i read Triton recommends WChanges. 4x 15% with their pure salt. which is expensive for larger setups. I've got a 180 total system volume.

They recommend water change for Br with Tropic Marine Pro salt.

RED too high
check quality of used salts, if you dose Br,stop immediately.
4x 15% weekly WC with TM PRO salt

I'm not going to chase individual elements. I honestly haven't read much about the triton method, and probably won't. I just wanted to see if anything was really out of what. I'll bring my K up a little and that will be the end of it. I probably won't do another test either.

ah touche. i read that wrong. im the same as you, i dont think ill go all the way with triton, just wanted to check i didnt have anything crazy going on. thanks for catching my error.
 
Not to be anti-Triton, curious if anyone here has tried "Seachem Trace" as a course of action to correct any trace element deficiencies and ICP tested for results before/after?
Without ongoing ICP testing I cannot imagine how someone could continually dose something like this; yet I also read that "there is no way to OD on trace elements"... help me avoid some confusion.

I understand your thinking on this. I too have always preached to people to not add anything that you can't test for but you know what? We can test for these things now. You just did. And most of them were not detected. These elements are found in nsw and anecdotal evidence by hobbyists, myself included, can contest that they probably do more good than harm at levels close to NSW. How you or anybody chooses to run their tank is completely up to the individual. You are posting on the triton forum so I assume you are at least here with an open mind to possibly hear about other ways of keeping corals.

You also might not realize but you or anyone who does water changes "is" trying to put these things into one's tank. The conventional thinking was, I do water changes to replenish trace elements and that should be good enough. I don't want to add other supplements if I cannot test for them. In my opinion this is an old way of thinking that still works but leaves much room for improvement with the advent of methods like Triton. If you could dose a few mLs of the elements I mentioned, notice some obvious improvement in colors, polyp extension and overall health, confirm the dosing with a subsequent triton test, wouldn't this be a good thing? If you dose via the instructions you paid to receive on your first triton test, you will stay well in the safe zone and probably not have to worry about even coming close to overdosing.

After dosing zinc and manganese at Unique Corals for just several weeks now the improvements on all things mentioned above are evident. We had zero detectable levels of these two elements on many of our raceways and have since brought the levels up to be more inline with NSW.

When I suggest these elements to you it is not a sales pitch. I genuinely believe you will benefit from adding them.
 
And please do not get caught up on the actual values of trace elements. I cannot stress this enough. Just shoot for a general range or slightly higher concentrations than the set point for beneficial trace elements. Little evidence exists of harm being done to corals from having slightly higher values. To me, logic alone dictates that these trace elements play a supporting role in the function that the macro elements play. How you get them into your tank is completely up to you.

Here are my latest results using TMpr. My only concern is the Iodine, which I sensed was low even before sending the test in since I was experiencing burned tips on my SPS.

I seem to have a lot of iron, I am not sure why. I only dose one hammer a week.
