I would like others thoughts on the use of pot scrubbers instead of bio balls, or ceramic media?

Wouldn't they clog with detritus or debris quickly rendering them less efficient? Just a thought. I do believe I read a article on someone using them cut up but I do not recall if it was a success

If I remember from when I did freshwater a 5 gallon bucket of bio balls wasn't that expensive. Is there a benefit of pot scrubbers over bio balls? I guess the question is why are you considering this. I am assuming it is cost

Except in unusual circumstances, such as a tank with very little live rock, I don't think anything is needed to facilitate the conversion of ammonia to nitrate. No reef tanks have excess ammonia that I have ever heard of.

For a fish only tank, that may be a different issue. And people have used nylon pot scrubbers for many years.

Cost is a concern. I watch a few diy videos and see that people use pot scrubbers, and cut up staws instead of bio media. Its a cheaper alternative. And I was wondering if it is as effective and the balls and ceramic media... I've seen the prices for k1 lol. I am in the middle of my start up cycle. Crushed shells and sand. 55gal. 3 stage canister and a clearview 110. And 4 damsels... I have a great aquarium guy down here. Just trying to learn more.
