Potassium nitrate (Spectracide stump remover) dosing steps

Great thread!
I have tried SPS several times and I always lose them. I've always had zero nitrate and high phosphate.
Pretty soon I'm going to give SPS another shot!
65 gal volume, I dosed 3ml spectracide and nitrate jumped to 10.
48 hours later I was at 2 so I dosed 2ml and waited another 48 hours, nitrates are at 8.
I estimate, I will only need to jump-start my nitrate with 1 ml maybe twice a week.
Best part is that my phosphates went down from the low teens using GFO to .03 without GFO, and my GHA growth seems to be stagnant!

Wait, I missed the part where increasing nitrate with dosing lowers phosphates. Can some one explain that?
 
Im curious to know why people opt for this stump remover stuff that will cause the chemical reaction in your test kits and lead you all to believe you are raising your nitrates instead of raising your nitrates by feeding your coral food. I am honestly mythed

I agree, dosing nitrate and still missing vital amino acids. Then also carbon dosing....
 
Did you guys even read the thread? Or the other one about SPS bleaching? Redfield Ratio?
I don't know why I continue to post my experiences.
I feel like I have accomplished something and you guys have rained on my parade once again.

This may only be slightly more than hypothetical....PO4 is used in building cell walls and such. Without nitrogen, the process can't work though.

Thing is, Nitrates are used like oxygen - for breathing. So NO3 is consumed at the rate of breathing. PO4 will have a very low rate of consumption tied to the lifecycle of the denitrifying bacterial.

I thought you were talking about carbon dosing for some reason....folks often mistakenly use carbon dosing to reduce PO4.

Nitrogen starvation will potentially hinder any biological process in the tank. Most organisms cycle nitrogen in a system, so the impacts of nitrogen depletion are usually pretty hard for us to discern.

So, if a bacterial population (or coral population, etc) were significantly nitrogen-limited, but all other factors were optimal.....dosing nitrates could produce a flush of cell growth that would consume PO4 at a faster rate than normal.

It should be a scenario of diminishing returns as far as fixing dissolved PO4 levels – because the rate of PO4 input to the tank is usually the problem...not the rate of consumption.

Make sense?

My understsnding is that without nitrate the phosphate does not get consumed by bacteria.

Nitrogen and phosphorus are both required for building new cells, so I'm sure that's true to at least an extent.

But, nitrate is far and away mostly "breathed" like oxygen by your denitrator population vs being used as food for building cell structure. PO4 is also only used for similar "slow" uses.

But it's also true, in the opposite case, that dissolved nitrogen uptake is diminished or halted in the absence of PO4. (Going from memory....hope this is the right link.....good read though, even if I'm wrong. ;))

Not sure what you mean by this quote - have you tried this?

I've been dosing potassium nitrate (spectracide stump remover) for a few weeks and my nitrate test numbers still haven't budged from zero – what's your theory about where the nitrates are going?

I've also been dosing some liquid amino acids. There's no test I can do for them, but again, there's nothing breaking down enough to read as excess nitrates in the water column.

My theory is that I'm gradually "filling up" my tank's nitrogen cycle. Among any other uses in the tank, nitrates seem to be coral's second favorite dissolved nitrogen source, after ammonium and before dissolved amino acids. They can also use urea, but it's the least used out of all of them.

I'm curious about your theory! :)

(BTW, my three little barnacle blennies aren't going to contribute much more than they are under any circumstance, and no more fish are going into this system...not in the foreseeable future, anyway.)

Very late to this thread. I've been dosing KNO3 for well over 1 1/2 years, I do not carbon dose and use no GFO. I have a mostly SPS tank and keep Nitrates around 5 ppm and Phosphates come in around 0.02 ppm. I am currently adding 0.2 ppm per day to my tank.

Nitrates in many people tanks are consumed just like alk and calcium are. Over time I have come to the realization that our coral, acropora is what I focused on, really need nitrates to grow and be healthy, and you are right NO3 are corals 2nd most preferred nitrogen source right below ammonium, and way above Amino Acids. I am currently playing with using just a tiny amount of AA in addition to KNO3 and seeing if that make s a difference but overall adding nitrates to the tank has really made a difference IMO.

that is a great article, I read it a few weeks ago and it really does make the case for nitrate dosing as well as adding a little bit of DFAA. I started AA dosing in amounts about 20% of the KNO3 I am adding a few weeks ago too.

Personally, I don't think you should be carbon dosing if you are adding nitrates. Stop carbon dosing or cut back so you have some nitrates in your tank. In my case I was probably carbon dosing when there was really no need to. When I stopped I found that I had to add a significant amount of nitrates to the tank, almost 0.8 ppm of NO3 per day.

It has to do with the theory of nutrient limiting. As I understand it, the reason carbon dosing works, is the tank is "carbon limited". By adding the missing carbon, it allows more bacteria to flourish and consume additional nitrate and some phosphate, the bacteria themselves to be exported from the system via skimming, and possibly eaten by corals etc. The problem is, the bacteria do not utilize equal amounts of carbon, nitrate, and phosphate, and they don't really follow the "Redfield ratio". It is not difficult to bring nitrates down to zero via carbon dosing in many systems...and your system then becomes nitrate limited. There is extra carbon, extra phosphates, but no nitrates. So some people (including me), have then dosed nitrates to allow yet more bacteria to grow to consume the remaining phosphate. I have achieved zero phosphates (Hanna low range) in the past using this method....and just recently have started doing this again, just more slowly this time. The intent is to balance it with just a trace of phosphates and nitrates.. .right now I am at around 5ppm nitrate and 0.05 phosphate. Pretty close to my target

Because most "food" includes phosphates. The intent is just to add just nitrate, not additional phosphates as well.

Pretty good number, I'm currently at .5ppm nitrate and .2-.3 phosphate. In fact I've been feeding heavily in order to bring each of those up some. That is why my interest here has been peaked.

I use NOPOX 2ml/daily, MarinePure Block, Cheato fuge, large skimmer, and high quality rock (Pulkain). I've not had any nutrient problem other that lack there of. My corals began to lose color when I increased lighting intensity. My current numbers seems to make my SPS very happy and not a hint of extra algae growth.

That's the theory, but I don't think we really understand what's going on.

If the tank was carbon limited, that should mean that we're correcting a condition and making things better and less stressful for our corals by adding vinegar or whatever.

Instead we are jacking with their environment and stressing them out. Corals in a carbon dosed tank seem unable to tolerate even moderate elevations of alkalinity, for example. That's not a sign of a healthier or less-stressed coral.

If you have a nitrate problem, I think you should be doing/changing things other than carbon dosing. Especially if you keep corals.

Worth repeating again and again that corals can consume loads of nitrate if they are fast growing...they even prefer it to many other things. But they can't be getting a lot of particulate foods or they will stop using dissolved nitrogen sources.

Nutrients, water flow and light levels all interact....so if you increase light, you may also have to increase nutrients (even more) or also increase water flow.

Keep an eye on PO4 as well...it can cause issues if it's too high, but it cannot go to zero. Your corals (and maybe other things) will be unhappy.
