This is my last attempt at an Acantharus Tang. Its been through two rounds of Prazi and has been in copper for over a week, I am using CopperSafe and the levels have tested above 1.5 each time. I am planning 14 full daysnin copper. Is there anything people that have had success with acanthrus tangs do extra to ensure success?

Thanks.

Make sure the copper level is at 2ppm and unless you can transfer him into a new, sterile QT after the 2 weeks, keep him in there for 30 days straight. Lots of nori, vitamins like Selcon or Vitachem. Plenty of hiding spaces (PVC). Have antibiotics handy in case of infection. Extra flow for comfort, since they love flow and swimming and it's hard to do that in a QT (this is something extra and no necessary).

I'm a little unconventional sometimes but my best advice is ditch the copper altogether and go to tank transfer method. Especially since you already did the prazi. 12 days and done. Really after 9 your done, the extra 3 days is for human error and undocumented possibility.

I wouldn't say that TTM is unconventional. If he can do TTM then Oh yeah do it! It's my preferred QT method as well.

I dont feed a lot of nori but I do use Selcon a few times a week and feed a quality frozen nightly. I will start adding algae more often. Plenty of hiding spots. And I have two HOB filters and a hydor powerhead for flow and I also keep the water level a little lower so it will splash more for oxygen. I do have some extra meds on hand beyond prazi and copper. By the time 14 days has passed in copper it will have been in QT over a month.

I'm sure TTM works great but I do not have the facilities or comfort level in that method.

Yes, but to be safe, you want to keep him in copper -at therapeutic levels- for the full 30 days if you don't have the ability to transfer him to another, sterile QT. You asked for the best way to achieve success, so that's my advice.

100% agree. I have a pair of Achilles, powder blue, powder brown, carribean blue, sohal, and clown tangs as well as other non acanthurus tangs. Improper qt and pre treatment with copper/CP is by FAR the biggest reason for failure for these fish.

Also I can tell you from experience it's really easy to mess up TTM and cross contaminate if you're not very very very careful. I can also guarantee you from experience it does nothing for velvet which is every bit as common as ich these days, IMO.

OK, thats where I have always been a little confused, the 14 or 30 days in full copper. It will get 30 days at theraputic level copper. Thanks.

Glad to clear it up! Keep us posted on your progress. :) And good luck!
