Powder Brown tang with what disease?

So I just lost my powder Brown Tang that I have had for 3-4 weeks. From the start he has been great, eat, got cleaned by the shrimp. A few hours ago I saw him with all these white spots on there. I thought it was just a sand because I had very fine sand and yesterday he had nothing on him.

Any thoughts on what happened, what this is and what I could do to prevent this next time. Also what chemicals could I have on hand that I could have used.

Copper would be a treatment option, and a fw dip to relieve the symptoms

That’s end stage Cryptocaryon, marine ich. What other fish are in the tank? You’ll almost certainly see them become infected. Treating in another tank with copper is the best course of action.

Assuming the fish arrived infected, if you had put it in a quarantine tank you could have treated it with copper before it got to this stage. The QT would also have prevented you from adding the infected fish to your display tank and likely infecting the other fish there.

However, if the disease was already in your DT, then quarantining a single fish wouldn’t prevent it because the disease was already there. It would still prevent the new fish from bringing in a new disease.

Any suggestions on what copper product I should purchase?

I thought ick was a slow developing disease, this came up over him within 24 hrs.

If you don’t have any corals or inverts in the tank, you can treat copper in the DT. The downside is you’ll be treating that much more water, versus a 10-20g QT. Plus it’ll nuke pods and others beneficial stuff as well

If you can justify it, maybe look into a UV sterilizer for the future! It can really help with sort of thing- especially when used in tandem with a QT. Sorry for you loss

Thanks for the all the input. This is hard/rough lesson.

Unfortunately I do have quite a few invertebrates invertebrates so I can't use copper.

I'll have to pull out the diamond gobo and tang and put them in a quarantine tank then treat them with copper.

How long will the ick parasite stay in the display tank without fishing it?

I'll also be looking into the UV sterilizer.

Ich can survive in a tank without fish for 76 days. I was reading a research paper about it (curious where the 76 days came from) and it said some species will be wiped out within 18 days. Just depends on what type you have. Increasing the temp in the tank helps expedite the parasites lifecycle.

YES, Fritz CopperSafe. Dose it carefully exactly as directed. Simple to use and remains effective without redosing for something like 45-days IIRC.

If you have a Yellow Tang my bet is it's next to die. And it's color makes Ich more difficult to spot before the disease has progressed to the final stages, giving you 1-2 days max if you're lucky.

Read up on freshwater dips. I cannot recommend them enough for providing some instantaneous relief for the fish. Then get right to copper treatment in a QT.

There are plenty of forums on here that can provide much better info than I can— anther alternative is to feed nutrients packed food and help the fish’s immune system fight off the ich. The only downside is the ich will remain in the tank, it just won’t affect the immune fish. If your fish become stressed though, it can lower their immune system and you risk an outbreak. As far as I know, the 76 day rule is the only way to fully remove ich from a system (minus copper nuke). It should be noted that if you let your tank sit fallow for 76 days, you should definitely QT every fish and dip every coral from that point on.

I would suggest using copper power. Ich hits an exponential growth phase, my guess is that you missed the early spots, and then when it hit that phase, the fish was overwhelmed. The large spots and the spots on the fins all point to ich.

I'm currently working on taking my 10gal and making it my qt tank with a sponge filter.

I have the Fritz CopperSafe on order and I'm keeping a every close eye on my yellow tang.

For quarantining a new fish, would you guys just start with a copper treatment and fresh water dip or only do that if you see signs problems?

I've had the best results dosing CopperSafe full-strength as directed, then do a lengthy (2-3 hour) drip acclimation to the QT. Copper below the recommended therapeutic level only stresses the fish and does nothing for treating a disease.

There is a chart somewhere on this forum that has the best type of copper for the fish
