How bad is it really? I have a power head pointing right at a new frag I got. The powerhead cycles on and off with another one across the tank every 45 seconds or so. It’s only the first day of it being in that spot. The one in question is the ASD Zenith frag above the Solomon Islands Blue Tort. All other frags are growing great with massive polyp extension

I'm pretty sure they prefer strong but indirect flow, but it's day 1 so not sure

If polyps are normally out and a few days in they arent opening I might worry.

I have a green birdsnest that grew into a direct path of a mp10 and the sides of the branches getting directly hit have lost their tissue.

I guess I’ll play it by ear! I can always move it a bit to the right and up but I’d rather not reglue it

This was a section of my gigantic Red Robin colony that grew into the path of a MP40. Some of the tissue blew off after it grew larger, then encrusted back over and look in the upper right there are branches that have formed flat plates from the flow.

Wow! How long did that whole process take for it to acclimate itself? This pump isn’t nearly as powerful as an MP40. I think it is a 600gph but still! That’s some interesting growth

A small frag will have a hard time in front of flow. A larger colony will do better as it has been established and is not under the stress that a new frag is in your tank. So think about sitting in front of a really strong fan all the time and how you would feel. It is not an enjoyable experience.

Same issue here, my bonsai acro was partially in front of my mp10 and started dying in that spot, I've moved the mp10 and it's starting to grow back

That colony was 7 years old, measured 12 x 18 inches across. You can see the beginning of the base recession here that ended up taking it out. I just walked over to the tank and I think it was the MP60 that is mounted next to the MP40 off to the right that was hitting it the most. I have a MP40 and MP60 mounted on both ends of the tank and 2 MP40s in the back.

Awesome colony dude.

I try to put corals in indirect flow and from there any new growth can handle the conditions they growing into, even direct flow from a powerhead. I've moved colonies into direct flow and have had the tissue blown off of some branches before.

I have had very good results with a lot of flow. I believe in scaleable in tank flow. I have 4 mp40s and 2 gyres in my tank. 2 mp40s and a gyre on each end. The gyres are mounted high for great surface movement which increases gas exchange and being in gyre mode provides good currents throughout middle of my tank. The mp40s are in reefcrest random mode. I don’t blast any coral but, the flow is significant. The higher the flow, the tighter the branching growth. I get solid growth, and the coral polyps are really extended and swaying with the flow. Flow is good but, should be random. The coral should get good lighting, too. Otherwise, they do have a tendency to loose color. Good flow will help with the broadcast feeding, though, which promotes growth. Angle power heads for good flow but, not to the point of blasting any of your coral. I’ve posted video showing my flow on my blog, Advanced Aquatic Solutions public Facebook page. Check it out! Feeding coral, amino acid supplement, strontium, iodine and potassium, calcium reactor and proper trace elements will promote strong coral with thicker branching.
