So I have a 40Breeder I am in the process of making that will have a 20Gal/Long Sump.

I cant' decide which powerhead to go with so from your personal experiences, which do you suggest and have liked the most?

PS: No Vortech or anything, can't afford to pay $150+ for a PH at the moment.
PSS: If you choose other, please state which you recommend.

Most likely corals will be Softies, LFS, zoa's/zoos, SPS/Monti etc

tunze 6025 and eheim 1260 or 1262 for a return sould be more then enough for a 40b

A couple of thos sunsun jvp102 is more than enough for your tank and they are around $20 each, great flow
Stronger than mp10 for sure

I just got a seio super flow 1500 you can adjust the intake if you need it to go lower doesn't come with a magnet but its heavy so you will want one so far I like it pretty well have a sicce 3 but it's got a hum that drives me nuts have had quite a few koralias never again! even not on a wavemaker they don't always start back up now they are used for mixing salt

Wow surprised at the amount of others as a choice.

No vortechs please as i can't afford to pay 200 for a PH.

Whats wrong with the Ocean Stream or the Tunze?

My theory is save up and buy things once...buy all the equipment and then buy the coral ....I wouldn't buy anything but a vortech because you will be upgrading from a 40 gallon sooner or later and you can always use the vortech's again on many different sized tanks....the tunze will work fine but most people end up upgrading to vortech's down the road anyways so why not just save up and buy it once...

because at the moment i don't think it justifies to pay 200 for one, i can do that later but at the time being its not a necessity to have a good tank, get what i mean?

I rather distribute that expense to the lights and more items than the PH at the moment. Maybe in a year id find the desire to spend that much on a PH but at the moment, i don't plan on cashing out that much for just 1 PH.

I have Vortechs and controllable Tunzes and I would say buy an affordable Tunze for now. Make sure it's controllable though, you can always get your money out of it down the road for an upgrade. I love my Vortechs but I do think they are over priced for what you get out if them.

No, I don't. Having had quality flow in my past tanks, makes a huge difference in the quality of the tank. I am sitting with a dry tank until I get all the pieces I need to do it up right, rather then get it wet fast.

On 1 powerhead that you buy once. That one powerhead makes the quality and quantity of your corals much better. If that super sexy piece grows 2X as fast with better flow, you get the idea.

When you buy the "right" piece first, it is cheaper then buying twice.

+1 Quality flow IMO is on the top of my list of important thing in my tank...

I like how everyone chimes in with ecotech. It's the same thing as a guy asking what's better, a mustang or a camaro? Then a bunch of guys say "FERRARI!" It's as if you're saying to these people that they can't enjoy something unless they have the top of the line everything. I'm slowly getting my gear together because I'm moving in the next couple months. Granted, I've purchased some nice stuff in preparation (Tunze 6095s, a 7096, and a Warner skimmer) but I was also looking at the Koralias. It's not an inexpensive hobby, but the people with the Ecotechs and Radions aren't the only ones that are enjoying it...I assume.

:crossedlips:

...sorry

IMO for that tank most any of the pumps will be fine. I personally run all vortecs now but I had a 40B as a frag tank and ran 2 Koralia Evo 750s on a wavemaker. Flow was great...used a Rio 1700 return pump and combined with the 750's it was a good combo. So I agree with cba191 completely....we all got by pre Vortecs just fine.....

The vortech's are great and I run them on my 55 reef. Do I think they are overpriced? Yup. Do I think they have drawbacks? Yup. They do not have the ability for the user to direct the flow by pivoting the power head. The tunzes have this ability.

I own and use Koralia, MP-10, and MP-40. I purchased both MP PH's used, so my wallet has not experienced the full retail price.
Koralia
PROs: Price, flow, adjustable direction.
Cons: Reliability, size, water+electricity

MP-10/MP-40
Pros: Automated random flow rate, distribution of flow, no electricity wet side, syncing (multiple units)
Cons:Price, noise (high flow setting), Did I mention Price?
