We can have a tank without a power head?I think any powerhead type pump is a potential risk to a wandering anemone. Even ones that have guards. The risk is less but not totally safe. It's just a chance many of us take.

Could I use a sock?Anything that you can fit an anemone guard to.
I wouldn't recommend it, no.Could I use a sock?
Whatever you can do to decrease the velocity of the water of the intake side of the power head to decrease the force tearing the anemone apart if it wander into it. Or anything to prevent the anemone to get to the PH on the first place will make it safer. There are quite a few things you can do but all cause cumbersome large contraption or decrease the function of the PH or both.Could I use a sock?
Pardon my ignorance here, but - out if genuine curiosity - is it just the intake side (the back/where the water comes in/etc.) that’s dangerous to nems and such, or is the output side (the front/where the water goes out/etc.) dangerous for them as well?Whatever you can do to decrease the velocity of the water of the intake side of the power head to decrease the force tearing the anemone apart if it wander into it. It is best not to keep the anemone altogether if you cannot keep it happy.
It's tough to do it without them, but it is possible. We can have a tank without a power head?
I found that using a closed loop can be a issue with the intake. So on my current 240, I made my intake out of a 2" pipe on the inside that had about 16" of total run. Then over that I made a diffuser box that is 12" x 24". After it ran for about 2 years I had to do some major re-arranging and was able to look at the diffusers. I found little to no debris against it. I clean out the pump 2x per year and don't see much inside it except a little slime.. It's RD3 150 watt. The intake of the close loop is dangerous. However the principle is the same. Decrease verlocity of the intake.
Back in the 1999, before the availability of the propeller type PH, I used large close loops in my 420 tank for circulation. I used 2X1.5 inch intake adapted with a mesh extension similar to perforated 1.5 inch pVC that is 2 feet long to defuse the intake. It was fine but as you can see fairly cumbersome. To total volume of water was around 6000 gal per hour.
