I am setting up a 220 gallon reef tank. I would like to have 4 power head in it. 2 on the sides and 2 on the back walls... What size power heads should I get? I am assuming I don't need 4 that are all rate for 220 gallons?

A "rule of thumb" is about 10-20 times your volume. so 2200 gph is 10 times your volume. Most find this range to be about right but im told 10 times flow is on the lower end. #reefsquad should know better than I do.

I would look at the new gyre 280.

As low as possible but dont want to waste money on something that wont work at all.. haha

I currently have one of these.. So I was thinking about picking up 3 more... This would also allow me to add controllers in the future...

I am setting up a 220 also. I'm going bare bottom so I can have higher flow to see what I can grow. I plan to have a gyre 150 one each end with 2 rw-8 on the back glass to start. But am going to play with it some. Also thought about 2mp40's. One on each end and the rw8's on back glass.

That's the plan. I had 1 on my 120 and it did ok by didn't feel like it reached the other side good enough. 120 was 4' so I'm going to try 2 on the 6' and see how it goes.

Ya that is beyond my budget at this time... but I like the idea...

Well you are building a big tank. Nothing will be cheap.

Look into Jebao pumps they are Chinese knock offs and will save you a few bucks. They don't last long though.

You get what you pay for.

I have used the jebao before. I really like them. They are easy to operate and set up. Didn't use them too long so I can't speak to the durability of them but I plan to use them again in the future. Can sometimes find them decent price on eBay. I like them better than the hydor but only for the controllability. I did cry one of my controllers though. I had the rw15 and the rw20 and took them out for a cleaning and plugged back into the wrong one so the controller blew. Still worked as a powerhead but couldn't control it anymore.

As far as the gyres I bought one of mine used ad seem to see them quite often for about 150-175 used.
Also bought one new from a convention call fragniappe the booth set up was selling them for 175. Was a coral vue booth. Had great deals on those and the skimmers and sumps.
