How's everyone doing?! Been reefing for closer to a year at this point! To catch everyone up... Been mad busy with work and college, but my love for saltwater aquariums has only grown!! Currently I'm running a 29gal biocube, as well as a 5.5 in my room. Although I was given a free 55, I decided it was not for me (talk about an ugly tank size) so here I am finishing up college and ready to put my tanks together into a nice appropriate 65. My father has given my a stunning hydroponic LED light I plan to use for my system. Currently I'm stuck on the flow rate. I prefer soft corals, but I may run stoneys in the future. Currently I'm stumped on powerheads for the 65. This will be my first tank with a sump (not drilled) I'm going the HOB overflow route. products say about 800gph (I expect maybe 4-600) JBJ currently has 2 500gph oceanstream pump with a controller for $90! But is that enough movement? There's also an option with 2 1,600gph pumps, yet I feel that may be over kill. Any ideas? Or pump reco's around that budget?

Hi, my tank is a 56 gallon column and I am guessing that my dimensions are not a whole different than your 65 gallon. I have a seahorse tank and although old school thought was that ponies needed low flow that has been been found to be untrue in recent years. My 56 has 400+ gph coming from the return, a rio with 800 gph and a nano syream 6045 which is adjustible. I have it around 1000gph which puts the total flow at over 2200 gph. Nearly all my coral are softies and they do fine. I do have a lot of the flow directed at the bare bottom of the tank where it disperses from there.

Do you have a bottomless tank? I think I'm going to do really fine sand this time
