Power out - temperature down to 45 F

Texas has a natural disaster and you are disgusted with it? Really!?!?!?

It wasn't really a natural disaster though, was it. The disaster was that the power grid collapsed, mostly not through physical damage to the infrastructure but through the basic inability to generate and distribute electricity. The weather wasn't really that bad.

I don't think I would have seen any damage at all if the power has stayed on.

The grid failed by choice. The power grid in Texas is not a public utility, there is no responsibility to harden the infrastructure as they do in the US.

How much is the fuel source for these generators? How readily available is that source of fuel over an extended period of time of crisis? The storm is over. How many other people need the same fuel as you? Where are you on the waiting list for a refuel? Can the delivery driver reach your home?...
No backup plan is perfect. I’d have gone solar except where I am in CT there are too many trees. Cannot even grow vegetables .... not enough direct sun. You’re right about the fuel. Last time we had a protracted power outage I was getting mighty low on propane. Trees down meant the trucks couldn’t get through. Plus demand was so great that the wait list was days long. Fortunately the power came back before the propane ran out.

Gasoline deteriorates over time. The longer you store it, the worse it gets.
That is why you use an additive. You also cycle the gasoline. This is easy to do. Fill car up with old gas use it and put new gas in can add stabilizer ... done.

Also an unused generator can have gasoline that degrades within the lines. It dries out into a crystalline structure that can be a large problem later.
You run the gennys every 6 months for maintenance and such. Some do this more often.

I have about 40 solar panels on my home. I am completely "off the grid"
And if you read my post you will see that I said that it made more sense to set up a whole house situation if you were going solar. Solar as a backup solution really really sux.

I am also not against solar, I would love to have it, but my house is old and I am trying to decide whether I tear down or buy new. Either way I am not investing the money up front for the solar with a long ROI only to have to give it up in possibly a few years. This isn't a debate over solar vs. gas it is a debate on back up solutions. Truth is if you are running solar you already have a back up solution, and I am jelly. Someday though I will get my solar. :)

I have lived in plenty of cold climates, I grew up in Idaho. For me the weather wasn't bad no. I have walked to school in colder. That said this was indeed a disaster, because TX hasn't seen this kind of cold weather in 122 years. The reason the infrastructure failed is because it wasn't planned for. Once again, the unexpected is what caused the disaster and then it created a chain of events that made things worse.

Think of it this way. What if your town reached 110F for 3 days? In TX people would laugh and move on. For a northern town this would be an unmitigated disaster and worse off the grid would probably go down under the load making things even worse.

FWIW

This is true. However the cost savings vs having the power grid being a public utility FAR offsets a situation like this. I lived in McKinney, TX about 10 years ago and I still receive a check for 30 or 40 cents a year from the co-op power company. lol

Being a curious European, who is the mainstreammedia blaming for this electricity disaster? Normally they would blame Trump i guess, but he's gone.
The mainstream media is asking why the equipment wasn't cold weather prepped. The governor and other political leaders in Texas ,bought out by the fossil fuel companies, are blaming renewable energy like frozen windmills when it was the gas and coal that failed.

The idea behind solar it’s free & in bad weather I can re-charge it without driving anywhere. But as many have said, it comes with a price.

As for Tx (I live in Dallas), HuduVudu’s hypothetical is correct. I’ve lived here my entire life & don’t recall it getting this cold for 7-10 days. Our winter is typically cool/wet days with highs in the 50’s & 20 degree swings in the same week.

Yes, the last freeze like this i remember in Houston happened in Dec '96 and lasted about 4 days and took the power out for maybe a day. Nothing had come close since until this past week.

Our most recent winter power loss was about 9-10 yrs ago.. but the highs werent in the single digits. Power came back in 2 days as I recall.

The Texas winter storms left us for 3 days without power.
I call myself lucky. Next winter season I will have a power backup.

The water temperature in the tank dropped to 45 F.
The room temperature had dropped to a cozy 40 degrees.
I had wrapped the tank with several layers of blankets and put multiple towels on the top cover.

1 day after warmup I find the following:

4 clown fish, 2 cardinals, a watchman goby and a neon goby survived.
They moved a bit sluggish at first but after a few hours of warm water they ate and are back to their usual behavior.
My red fire shrimp looks like he went through a blender. His antennas are bend and he hasn’t left the spot I found him. But he’s moving.
Pistol shrimp is fine.
My long tentacle anemone moved from an open space to a deeper sand bed between rocks.
Tuxedo urchin and pencil urchin moving fine.
My serpent start fish is fine too. He had moved into one of my pistol shrimps deep caves.
Only to be kicked out by the pistol shrimp after the water warmed up.
All the trochus snails survived. Cerites are gone. Have not seen the nassarius yet
Looks like a few hermits are gone.

Most of the soft corals survived. First totally limp but now standing up.
Kenia tree, daisy polyp, gas, hammer head and toadstool seem to come back.
My finicky toadstool starts to show its tentacles. He gets upset with me every time I put my hand into the water then he retreats for several days.

Questions:
1- should I do a water change and infuse new bacteria? Or do the beneficial bacteria survive those temperatures?
2- should I wait and see if the Xenia comes back or take it out? See pic below.
3 - anything I should watch out for?
my Xenia seems a goner .....

Did the xenia survive?

It was a giant mess. Grid failures in areas with mandated rolling blackouts (they originally told everyone that these would only last 15-45 minutes at a time, our first was 14 hours). TX didn't have backup help from other states because at some point in the past TX opted out of Fed guidelines needed to be able to tie to other states like all other states do. Presumably for lower pricing to customers? I don't know about current rates comparison but I've lived in five other states and never really noticed a huge difference.

Anyway, glad your tank is doing well! Mine (210g sps) got down to 66 degrees at one point. I was cycling hot water bottles in it (we still had hot water from gas water heater). I'd say at least 8 long failures after this. Luckily I was able to get it back to 76 degrees before the second. I lost at least 3 fish and looks like two colonies. Much better than I'd thought would happen. Been up solid for 2+ days now.

A good friend in the Austin area has recently moved and had his 120g SPS tank running at a LFS. That entire LFS went down and so far insurance is denying the LFS claims. So sad!

Solar is awesome but really expensive compared to a generator. And, propane or natural gas covers the fuel issues. Someone posted you can get a dual fuel one and even get (some) smaller portable connected to your house natural gas. A Generac would be sweet and I bet the dealers of these down here will do very well this year.

Yeah, I feel for you guys - after a similar but milder event 10 years ago it sounds like they made recommendations to upgrade the infrastructure but they were never followed. I'm sure someone decide they could save a few bucks because "hey, what're the odds it'll happen again?"

Emergency preparedness is not free - it's just like with our tanks. Having a backup heater or return pump costs some money, and until you need them it seems like wasted money. After you need them it's money well spent!

Sorry this thread got hijacked with the solar debate. I think it is amazing that his tank got down to 45 degrees! and he had survivors. Absolutely amazing and really makes you wonder about the 1 degree tolerances we try and keep. He just had a forced stress event and while he lost some not all. I don't know how anything survived. Absolutely amazing how hardy these creatures are/or can be. The pics of that tank today seem impossible.

I was lucky. Kept the tank wrapped so no light for anything. The fish where lethargic for the first few hours but recovered as I slowly warmed up the tank.
The softies did well. My sugar cane is now showing a less large polyp.
But all in all very lucky.
Heh even my tiny pomp pomp crab survived. Not white anymore more brown colored but alive and well

That is truly amazing @rpkneumann I hit 63-64 more than once over the four day nightmare. Ended up loosing eight fish and two SPS colonies. One I managed to save a few frags of though.

curious you had such heavy losses - what were your 8 fish? I assume delicate things.

Not really. I kept the temp from going lower, but the first outage was 14 hours., second and third about 12 hours, then a couple at 9 hours, then 6 hours, 3 hours off and finally stable...it's a bit blurry at this point. I think possibly all my corals affected teh O2 some? My tank is packed with corals. Fish lost: Flame Angel, Flame Hawk, Mandarin goby pair, 3 Allen's damsels, Purple Pseudo. However, JUST saw my female mandarin tonight finally so I guess only 7 lost. 210g mainly SPS with some colonies beyond 12" diameter.
